Published Date: 29 February 2008
PRINCE Harry is to be pulled out of Afghanistan amid fears for his safety.
The 23-year-old Household Cavalry officer, who has been fighting the Taliban in Helmand Province for the past 10 weeks, is set to be flown home to the UK, it was reported today.

The move, which will be a bitter blow to the Prince, follows the breakdown of a news blackout deal agreed across the UK media after foreign websites leaked details of his secret deployment.

The final decision on whether to extract him was due to be taken today by the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup after discussions with the head of the Army, chief of the general staff, General Sir Richard Dannatt.

It was General Dannatt who last year faced the task of announcing a U-turn on plans to deploy the Prince – a Cornet or Second Lieutenant in the Blues and Royals – to Iraq.

Intelligence picked up a series of specific threats to Harry and his comrades in Iraq after details of his planned deployment were announced and received widespread publicity.

It is feared that the revelation that the third in line to the throne has been fighting in Helmand would increase the tempo of attacks on British forces by the Taliban.

No details are available on when the Prince will arrive home.

The Prince has spent the past ten weeks living his dream of serving on the frontline. During a posting to Garmsir, the southernmost part of the province under allied control, he was able to go on patrol and mix with locals.

His work as a "JTAC" (Joint Terminal Attack Controller) involved carrying out detailed aerial surveillance.

The development will be a major blow to Harry who was devastated last spring when his planned deployment to Iraq had to be cancelled.

He considered leaving the Army but was given fresh hope by the chance to retrain as a JTAC in order to go to Afghanistan as part of a battlegroup centred on his own regiment the Household Cavalry.

The deal held for two-and-a-half months since his deployment in mid December despite two separate visits from British media to observe the prince at work.

General Dannatt last night praised the mainstream media for its restraint in not publicising details of Harry's deployment before.

He also joined Prime Minister Gordon Brown in hailing the prince as an "exemplary" young officer. "The whole of Britain will be proud of the outstanding service he is giving," Mr Brown said.

But in an interview just last week Harry conceded that on his return to the UK he could be a "top target" for homegrown jihadists sympathetic to the Taliban.

"Once this ... comes out, every single person that supports them will be trying to slot me," he said.

Why did the MOD tell the press in the first place?
Surely this should have been kept totally secret until he had finished his tour-of-duty!

The MoD didn't tell the press. This news was broken to the world by an American website.

Why can't they just leave the bloke alone? He is a soldier. He wants to do his duty. Let him.

Lets no kid ourselves this guy is far far away from any real action. Pictures of him patrolling a street are a joke, it’s him and a camera crew for godsake, where's the rest of his platoon? And there’s no one in the “town” Clambering onto a scimitar he's surrounded by what looks like members of the "regiment". Its nothing other than a PR stunt to justify this playboy's other antics.

He's a lot closer to 'the action' than you are. What about all the other personnel in Afghanistan that aren't front line troops - are they all involved in a big joke too? I suggest yuou take your pills and go back in the cupboard for a few hours.

Alba-Hibs

What are your immature jibes about his parentage adding to the debate? About as much as any of your commentary really.....

what a shame that the American press was the one to blow the shistle on a courageous young man--AND his troops. If I had a son fighting along side of Harry and this new came out, I would be worried even more over the fate of Harry's troops and Harry. And to imply that Hewitt is Harry's dad-how cheap. If you look at his uncle, Diana's brother, you will see a very storong resemblance to him . Get a life #4. Are YOU out there fighting for your country? I do not favor this war but any young person who is there deserves our respect and admiratiion, NO MATTER who he's related to.

If the British Army are to stay there then Harry Hewitt should too. Whats the point in a soldier which needs to be protected. Either be a soldier or not.

In my opinion it is a losing battle anyway. The CIA trained the Afghan's too well to be defeated in the manner which the Allies are fighting

Boswall, I've served my time soldering , please enough of your hypocritical, cheap puerile name calling.

The other troops not on the front line of course are important. Every rifle on the ground needs 6 or 7 behind for logistics, intelligence, etc, no issue with them whatsoever, after all they're all on 6/9 month tours……...

This playboy has been dispatched there to do what??? What does he add? In 10 weeks actually what he adds is a hellava lot of real soldiers tied up guarding him. He's simply been sent there with a camera crew for him to feel and look good. If he wanted to serve he should have been made to follow his Father and Grandfather into the Senior Service, not this charade of wee pretendy soldiering, it denigrates the real boots on the ground.
17

Boswall,

29/02/2008 15:22:03
Paddi,

Can you please demonstrate what part of my previous post was hypocritical?

You have absolutely no data about the operational measures taken to protect Wales in theatre. What specific troops were dispatched to guard him and only to guard him?

I'm, no fan of his but the guy's in a no win situation and I have more respect for him having served in Afghanistan than any armchair generals sniping at him over the net and *possibly* suffering from professional jealousy.

actually no...its not my country fighting !!
there are some of my fellow countrymen fighting, but they have sworn allegiance to some german woman !!!

I'm no great lover of the royals but having seen the news reports I had to admire him.
It would appear that Harry has to watch for snipers here as well. The world according to Paddi.
"When I was a soldier we did real fighting, none of this missiles. We were in the trenches fighting hand to hand."
What you did is really of no importance or interest and that Paddi is perhaps why you are so bitter?
He is royalty and therefore worth more than you! That is why he is protected. If you were killed in action no one would "really" care and you might get a line or two in the paper. If he gets killed there will be people who do care and it would be big news.

"Get a life #4."

Umm......your post was #4. Is this some sort of bi-polar thing?

Your country is Britain. It says so on your passport - and it's that rather than the chip on your shoulder that's correct. Go have a look outside, it's not that scarey.

Oh, and regardless of her familys lineage the Queen's British (just like you).

#19 Totally agree with you, I to am no Royalist but he will now be a target here at home as well, and most probaly all of the Royal family will be. I too admire him just as much as I admire all of our troops no matter where they are stationed in the world.

fiferjohn,

he is no different to any other solider, he signed up so takes the same risks as everyone else it makes me sick that just because he is born to a certain family is a better than everyone else .that in my option is rubbish just because of birth does not make anyone better only what they do in life makes them a better person .
the treatment he is being given is to me an insult to all the parents and family of anyone else serving as it gives the impression that their son and daughter is not important when they are.

THE BPRENTICE,

I don't know why so many troops are required to be deployed? just leave Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup there...that should be enough to scare off the locals.

A few random thoughts:

They aren't really fighting for their country. They are in a stupid pointless war they will never win run by the USA. They need to get out. They simply make the situation worse. There was never a better recruitin sergent than the west poking its nose in the Islamic world.

I agree that the Taliban did have USA training, but the Afghans have never been beaten in a war. It's their business; they fight amongst themselves all the time and they are good at it. Why anyone who knew anything about history would even begin to think that there was a chance of victory there is beyond comprehension. Neither The British Empire in its prime nor The Soviet Union could defeat them.

In any case most of the people who count are in Pakistan in the tribal areas over the border from Afghanistan. As Pakistan is USA's ally, we can't go in there.

It was idiotic to allow Harry to become a soldier, and to train him for going to Iraq and Afghanistan. Why put him in the army when we know he is a bullet magnet. It puts everyone else at risk.

What is the obsession with having all the male royals in the forces?

Get them doing social work; feeding the poor and old and sick, raising the profile of people in need. Harry's already proved himself to be brilliant at that in Lesotho. That way they earn their living.

As for people who question his parentage... pretty low thing to do huh? You sure of yours?

27

Tris,

29/02/2008 22:23:56

Fifer john.... you really are failing to see the point.

I am totally opposed to Morarchy. I'd have every last one of them in a proper job in a heartbeat. I detest this nonsense of Highness and Majesty.

That said, Harry has to be brought back because he would be a huge prize. If the Taliban knows where he is they will go after him because of the kudos it would bring to kill or capture and torture the Queen's grandson.

In being there Harry is putting the lives of everyone who he works with in danger. They blow up his vehicle ... they blow up his compatriots.

It's for the sake of the others that Harry has to be brought out. To the lad's credit he sees that.

This might have worked in the 19th century but the fact is that a modern sophisticated audience was never likely to swallow three months of heavily protected 'action' as a basis for hero worship. This episode makes the Royals look like a joke, and guess what, they are, just like the medals they give out celebrating a long dead British Empire.
