Published Date: 27 November 2008
ALISTAIR Darling, the Chancellor, has been forced into a dramatic U-turn on whisky excise duty less than 48 hours after a tax rise in his Pre-Budget Report provoked a storm of protest.
The Chancellor admitted he had made a mistake increasing duty on Scotch whisky, which would have led to a 29p rise in the price of a bottle.

He had intended the change to be offset by a reduction in VAT, but yesterday admitted that bottles of Sc
otch whisky would have been more expensive.

"In relation to spirits what we announced on Monday didn't actually achieve that, so I'm tabling a further order today to ensure that on spirits the duty there is at a slightly lower rate, which I think will hugely benefit the spirits industry wherever it is," he said.

The duty increase on whisky will now be 4 per cent, half the original rate of 8 per cent announced in Monday's PBR.

But opposition MPs seized on the U-turn.

Angus Robertson, the SNP's Westminster leader whose Moray constituency produces more than half of Scotland's malt whisky, said the initial move had been a "reckless decision" and the whisky industry was now being treated as an afterthought.

Alistair Carmichael, the Liberal Democrats' spokesman on Scotland, said it was an embarrassing climbdown, adding it beggared belief that the Chancellor had been "so unaware the impact his proposals would have on such a crucial Scottish industry".

And while the Scotch Whisky Association welcomed the backtracking as a "quick and positive" response, one producer warned that the government was destroying the industry with continuing rises – and setting a dangerous precedent for foreign governments.

Mike Keiller, chief executive of Morrison Bowmore, said he was surprised the Chancellor made such a "basic error".

"It sets a very bad example for other governments to take and could threaten our export market," he said.

The government was landed with a fresh headache after beer and wine producers demanded a drop in their excise duty rates too.

This idiot couldn't balance a savings account.
Victimize the Scots seems to be the only tactic left for Broon and Co.
Why not tax some London sh!t for a change. Or is it because all these fakey bakey Labour sell-out Scots all live there.

Interesting there is also a small paragraph elsewhere about how a peer has cottoned onto the fact that the Labour Government are stitching up HBOS

Definitely out of his league. Maggie Thatcher would have increased the tax by 35% and introduced ration books to cut the consumption. :~(

Hmmmnn, he got the figures wrong is what we are told.
The figures wrong for one little bit of tax relating to the price of a bottle of Whisky........and this man has the entire budget of the UK to calculate!
Anyone else find this more than a little worrying?

The thing is, he was telt he was wrong but he forged ahead anyway.

This level of arrogance will bankrupt England and will take Scotland with it and I don't want to be on that sinking ship when it happens.

This economically illiterate Darling did not foresee the consequences of scrapping the 10% income tax rate, the rise in duty on spirits or the increase in distribution costs implicit in the fuel duty increase.

Is he Rufus in disguise?

Passing a lawand defending it on one day and revoking it on the next day saying it was a mistake, i have never in my life heard of such incompetence.

This man clearly has not the faintest idea of what he is doing and neither do the treasury civil servants that are working for him, why was this basic error not pointed out?

This man is in charge of splashing £500 billion of cash around and is making basic mistakes like this?

It's not Darling who worked out the details but some clown of a civil servant who was worrying about their pensions..

I notice that Darling, like his master, the Quisling Maggie Broon, seems to have lost a lot of his Scottish accent. We know that Maggie Broon had elocution lessons to get rid of his Scottish accent in order for him to be more appealing to Middle England, so presumably Darling has done the same thing.

Pity it's a waste of time as even the English are not so stupid as to fall for it. They'll still kick the New Labour Sleaze and Corruption Party out at the next general election.

It would be better if Brown admitted his mistake over running the uk economy in its current mess.

If there was any ministerial responsibility left Brown should have resigned in disgrace.

Shades of Callaghan's government in 1979.

Hopefully, the next few general elections will follow the same trend as those from 1979 to 1997---only this time maybe stupid labour will be relegated to oblivion permanently.

Rumours are that allegedly, it was Lord Foulkes, (who seemingly is a bit of a bevvy merchant), who pointed this out as he could no longer enjoy a fine malt on his MSP's pay.

Malt whisky prices should be reduced. Why should a Scots product be subject to 70% per bottle?

All this waffling, back-peddling, and repetitive incompetence is enough to send some of you Scots to the solace of IRISH WHISKEY, perhaps?

Darling is an Englishman - born in Hendon,London.

What difference does it make whether his accent is english or scottish?
