ALEX SALMOND has received 72 gifts since he became First Minister, ranging from books to paintings and alcohol to crystal.
Under the ministerial code, he can retain gifts valued at less than £140 and has decided he will keep 29 of them "for private use".

The Scottish Government gave details of the four gifts which were valued at over £140. They included a painting from artist John Lowrie Morrison and a plaque from Scottish Power.

But it only gave general categories for the other 68 – 12 were alcohol, four were food, two were glass or crystal ware, three were ornaments, one was jewellery, seven were art, 16 were books, three were china, five were clothing and 15 were "outside these categories".

Lothians Labour MSP George Foulkes, who obtained the information in a parliamentary answer, said: "I would have expected more gifts to have gone to good causes and his failure to publish the full details speaks volumes for the Government's commitment to openness and transparency."

A spokeswoman said a full register of gifts to the First Minister, Cabinet Secretaries and Ministers would be published soon.

Has social services been informed of George Foulkes mental state?

1. I think Lord Foulkes is just raging that the 12 "alcohol" related gifts did not make their way to his favourite "good cause" - Lord Foulkes.

Whilst having an incompetent Labour party helped him, I would not consider it a gift?

I think George Foulkes has displayed a certain level of envy ever since Alex Salmond became First Minister.

I think this famous quote sums him up:

"I could have been a contender, I could have been somebody, instead of a bum which is what I am.""

If he had lived several hundred years ago Lord Geordy would have made a great court jester, apart from the fact that I am given to understand that they spoke the truth.

Fellow Cybernats....

Don't be saying bad things about Lord Foulkes... He'll get his own back on Newsnight Scotland!

Seriously, does this man not have better things to do with his time in Scotland. If this is the best the Labour Party can do, we really should be glad they no longer rule Scotland.

Keep it up George!!!!

Does George Foulkes do any constituency work? It's just as well he's not my MSP. We know he pops down to London now and again to collect his expenses but how long does he spend in the House of Lords? Is there a way to find out? What gifts did he receive? Give up the playground behaviour Lord Foulkes, the country's getting weary of it.

What a petty ignorant hypocritical little man Foulkes is.... "Leader of country gets gifts". Next week we'll be hearing from Foulkes the profound revelation that bears do stuff in woods.

I just love the fact that Foulkes ain't smart enough to realise that with rubbish like this its he that is the derided laughing stock. Heck, even the Labour Party must be having a private giggle at this bafoon's expense.

Lord Foulkes would have been a wonderful idiot with the travelling fairs in the old days.
Most people would have delighted at throwing rotten fruit at him, a few would have just laughed and the rest would have pitied him.

Pathetic. Is Foulkes really a Lord and an MSP??? And he spends his time, and more specifically, some parliamentry researcher's time (and consequently our tax money) FOI'ing this?

I'm all for transparency in government (after all, how else do we find out about sleaze?), but this is bottom drawer stuff. I'm sadly coming to the conclusion that, as a result of a few people, I will never vote Labour again.

Then a member of the labour party tapped him on the shoulder saying, be quiet about wendy..

Christ what a nauseating thought, just as I was about to have my dinner!
He does seem to have a knack of making himself out to be a total idiot every time he opens his large gob.
Good entertainment though!

#16 Absolutely! Do you reckon its possible to use FOI legislation to find out how much it has cost us taxpayers to answer all of Foulkes pointless FOI requests? Just remember that every time he tries to go one of these fishing trips for potential rentaquote smear stories he's wasting lots of civil servants' time! If he was in the SNP doubtless he'd be calling for his own resignation when you think of all the useful things that time and money could be spent on....

The mans an Ejit if he thinks anyone is actually taken in by this nonsense.

strange you say that. The time Foulkes got arrested, after assaulting an old lady, pushing her into the gutter, rolling in said gutter himself then punching a policeman who tried to help, he was reported to have been running down the street, arms outstrecthed doing a Batman impersonation, even to the point of the 'nanananananana' music...(sad, but actually true)

Not sure if he was 'en plume' at the time tho...

24 Foulkes has admitted to tabling parliamentary questions "as a joke " (see Scotsman, December 07)

Complaints about such waste of tax payer money can be made to the Scottish Parliament Standards Commissioner....(not as a joke)

Clearly Alex Salmond has fully declared all the gifts he has received since taking office. He has operated strictly within the parameters of the Parliamentary rules. And yet still Baron Foulkes of Cumnock levels criticism. Unbelievable. A non-story.
