SSP candidate for Glasgow East - Frances Curran - has moved to dispel any confusion between her and the Labour candidate who shares the same surname.
Party workers will distribute thousands of leaflets across the constituency with the message :

"VOTE FOR THE LEFT CURRAN NOT THE RIGHT CURRAN"

The leaflet contrasts Frances as being a Socialist with Labour candidate Margaret Curran who the SSP say used to be one.

The leaflet lists the SSP' s opposition to the Iraq war, for the scrapping of the council tax and in support of free school meals.

It reproduces the ballot paper for Thursday's poll with a cross indicating Frances' name.

Frances said: "The SSP is fighting this election on a clear socialist programme as opposed to Labour who are lined up with the Tories in attacking benefit claimants and the unemployed.

"We are distributing this leaflet as an aid to voters who might make the mistake of voting Labour thinking they are socialists."

Both the SSP and Labour have now put out leaflets replicating the ballot paper.

That's illegal.

"Caroline Flint is one of that new generation of Labour MPs, like Hazel Blears, James Purnell, Anne Snellgrove, Liam Byrne and a few others, who have absolutely no connection with traditional Labour Party values or traditions. The Trade Unions should look long and hard at why these closet Thatcherites are being pushed forward as government ministers."

Socialist aye right, just how stupid do they think people are. Thanks to Frances Curran for pointing
out to the people of Glasgow the only Curran

living in million £ house.

Curran is the Gaelic word for 'carrot'. I bet the Labour carrot is the orange one.... ho-ho.

I hope Labour get trounced. It's funny but the Tories will be lucky to retain their deposit yet both the Toerags and LaBores are right-wing and Unionist and have broadly the same policies on everything, especially war. Is there sane life in Glasgow East?

Here is an interesting little tit-bit on Glasgow East:

"Meanwhile, one feature of Glasgow East makes it potentially fertile territory for the SNP. At the last census no less than 96 per cent chose to say they were Scottish rather than British, more than in any Scottish constituency."

It is interesting that the SSP candidate is now worrying that voter confusion over similar names may harm them with the taint of the Labour Party.

Socialism is not something that I would personally vote for. But I do respect people that have a core belief that they stick to.

The sleaze ridden Labour Party seems to have lost its core belief. They once held themselves up as the paty of the working man. Those days are well and truly past.

Now what you get are half baked Tory Policies that even Thatcher would not have had the Gall to try and impose. The only difference is Labour will attempt to spin in as somehow humane to target the most vulnerable.

Margaret Curran claims that she will stand up for the East End. Now she says she fully supports the Tory Work for Dole program. Make no mistake, Margaret left the East End a long time ago. She will vote for any Tory Policy that her betters in the party tell her too.

I hope that the people of the East End make an effort to vote. But Please, if you are only making your choice based on who your father voted for, stay home.
It only makes you look stupid and leaves you as easy prey for sleazeballs whose only interest is lining their pockets, like the last scumbucket you elected.

By all means vote, but vote for who YOU think will represent your interests.

Labour today refused to be drawn on claims the daughter of retiring Glasgow East MP David Marshall operated two private firms from the Marshall family home which also houses Mr Marshall's publicly-funded office.

Reports claimed Christina Marshall registered the property companies based at her father's home in March. The story comes just two days before the crucial Glasgow East by-election.

Scotland Office Minister David Cairns, who is managing Labour candidate Margaret Curran's campaign, said: "As far as we are concerned, David Marshall stood down as an MP on doctor's orders.

advertisement"Two doctors' letters said he wasn't fit to carry on, and we have accepted that."

Was That A Medical Doctor or a Spin Doctor?

#15 - aye, if we all vote that way, we'll be stuck in 'Great' Britain for years to come and be saddled with all the imperialism, xenophobia and warmongering that comes with it. Time to turn our backs on that and go back to the pre-Union days when Scotland had good relations with our Euro neighbours, while England was at war with them.

It should be simple.

You take one look at the Ballot paper and search for Labour and don't place a cross next you it.

Pick another party.

Why is it you have to be Scottish but not British? What's wrong with being Glaswegian, Scottish, British and European?

No 11 above is right: the SNP have no monopoly on saying what is and what isn't Scottish. But what are they? They have changed from simply being a Little Scotlander party to a populist coalition that will say anything that sounds popular, regardless of whether it will actually be achieved.

But one thing hasn't changed - their only political principle is separation. I hope the voters see through the SNP's inferiority complex about England and instead vote for a candidate and party that is determined to reduce inequality and so change more people's lives for the better.

#26 The SNP is the only party run from Scotland and able and willing to defend the Scottish people from rip-off and smear. They put Scotland first and that is now essential to rebuff those who for career reasons and strange reasons run Scotland down. A little self confidence goes a long way and ending the union means joining the adult world and not accepting hand-me-down foreign policy of crazy wars and weapons of mass destruction in a benighted last imperial fling. British? No thanks! I am Scottish and a little proud.

i agree with you Senga. A vote for the deceitful labour party is a vote for more corruption and lies - they won't make positive changes in Glasgow east, they had years to make changes and did nothing except line their own pockets...

Oh Dear, Andymg telling Scottish Patriots that they have an inferiority complex. How silly can a Unionist look?. As silly as Andymg.

In case the point has been missed Andy, we are the people who believe Scots are well capable of joining the international community. You and your Unionist 5th columnists for London Controlled New Labour just want to ensure the path is open for you to do a Marshall and Curran and retire as the New Labour Snouts in the Trough Brigade down in your capital.

Looks like you lot will need to get a job or work for the dole. Fascist Chairman Brown has said he is getting it ready for you lot.

Now lets see, according to New Labours statistics (which must be right, as per the inflation rate of 3.8%, my erky) there are supposedly 670,000 jobs available right at this moment for fit qualified workers. But then we find out that New Labours figures for the Unemployed are a whopping 3 million. Where exactly are the millions of jobs going to come from, when one considers that Brown the Clown has bankrupted the group of countries that make up the Ununited Kingdom. After all he is such an influential power broker, who was completely ignored by the World Media on his grandstanding tour of the places where 1 million men women and children were slaughtered for their Oil.

And you want Scots to continue to be part of this unholy alliance of the Empire of the United States. Forget it, if and when we are invited to help free a country, we will take Doctors, Nurses, Drugs. Hammers and nails to build basic amenities for the local people, and we wont steal their resources.

Thats the Scotland I want to be part of. Not puppydog Unionists who blindly follow their US Masters.

Now away and have a good look at yourselfs in the mirror, and get some pride and self respect for yourself and your disadvantaged Scottish People who are shafted by a Foreign Government everyday of the 300 years.

Aye Salmond is arrogant indeed.

Isnt arrogant the term used by the ruling classes of the past who thought any working man should tip their hat to them, or he was an arrogant, unwashed lesser Scotsman.

Alexander Salmond is exactly the type of brilliant political leader that will carry Scotland to freedom from a illegal Union. My God he is so arrogant he has the Westminster Prime Ministers future in his hands. If we win then Brown is gone, just like Wendy and Wee Jockee, who Alex has already terminated.

This country of 5 million people have the Unionistas dancing to our tune, out of fear we will leave them broken and busted. Alex Salmond is achieving more for Scots in the last 12 months than Westminster did in 300 years.

But you know, Aye Alex will probably end up being voted out of running the New Scotland at some point after we take our nation back. I suggest probably ten years, but after that he will be reveered as the Father of Scottish Freedom. Whilst the browns and the Unionista in general will be remembered as the traitors in the Scottish History Books. Scottish Bairns will study the life of Alexander Salmond the Liberator of the NATION OF SCOTLAND and will visit his Statue in the Scottish Parliament.

Just three years to go, then the Scottish People will shout out their demand for the return of the Nation of Scotland to its own control.

Yes I have often thougth that if Scotland becomes seperated from the rest of the Uk we will need to indulge is some revisionism and renaming.

Obvious examples are that "Union Street" becomes
"Freedom Street".

A "Full English Breakfast" becomes an "Imperialist Butcher's Breakfast".

So far so easy.

But we can also celebrate the leader.

May I suggest that Livingston is renamed Salmond City.

Being so close to his place of birth and home it would represent a New Town for a New Scotland.
33

Jock Politicaljunkie,

Glasgow 24/07/2008 10:14:25

#35, Doh,

Heh, heh. Good for a giggle but I'm not much of a revisionist. Duff though it has been for Scotland over most of the last 300 years, the union cannot be written out of Scotland's history.

As for renaming a town or city after Salmond...not really the Scots way is it; and I think such an idea would just embarrass the man and provide ammunition to the "Salmond is arrogant" brigade.

Union Street in Glasgow and in Aberdeen are so central that renaming them could just cause confusion. Better to keep them as a warning!

I would make one exception, however, and that is with the name of Cumberland (as in the Duke of...) I would certainly have all and every thoroughfare named after this genocidal butcher renamed for Salmond - a man who will lead his Country to Independence through democratic means.
