THE SNP today hit out at the UK Government's "appalling" data loss record, claiming more than 13 million records were lost this year, equivalent to 25 every minute.
Home affairs spokesman Pete Wishart said: "These diabolical figures reveal a shockingly cavalier approach to data security by the Labour Government.

"Despite promises of tightened security and high level reviews in light of the loss of the personal details of 35 million child benefit claimants the previous year, there have been nine serious security breaches in 2008."

Mr Wishart said Labour's record on data security was reason enough to abandon ID cards.

He added: "Instead of slashing the Scottish budget by £1bn, Labour ministers should cut their plans for ID cards which are both expensive and intrusive and, judging by the UK Government's track record, a data disaster waiting to happen."

Also earlier this year it was reported that the MoD alone had lost over 700 laptops over a 4-year period. That's one every 2 days - for 4 years!! I'm afraid the SNP are only able to comment on those losses that were made public - maybe only 10% of total.

I wouldn't trust these people in Westminster to go to the corner shop for a loaf of bread without losing the money, losing the bread or forgetting what they were sent for.

I really do think the Scottish Nationalist Party are tempting fate - it's not as if those elements of the public sector for which they have responsibility don't handle personal data! I have seen no evidence of a frantic nationalistic inspired drive to protect such files, other than "don't lose a laptop or you'll get into trouble" notices and memos, which presumably also happens in the MOD.

Alex Salmond is right to point out the sheer incompetence and utter corruption of the New Labour Sleaze government.

They can't even run their Lothian branch!!

Well done Alex. Have another successful year.
