RUSSIAN warships, including an aircraft carrier group, took part in military manoeuvres off the Atlantic coast of France and Spain yesterday in what Moscow billed as its biggest navy exercise in the area since Soviet times.
Russia sent two long-range "Blackjack" bombers to the Bay of Biscay to carry out a simulated electronic test-firing of cruise missiles, while anti-submarine aircraft patrolled the area.

The exercise, off the coast of two Nato alliance members, is the latest Kremlin demonstration of resurgent military muscle on the world stage and likely to appeal to voters choosing a successor to the president, Vladimir Putin, in March.

Mr Putin, expected to retain considerable influence in the country on stepping down after a maximum second term, has done much to rebuild military forces depleted after the collapse of communism.

For years, commanders had complained ships could not put to sea and warplanes could not fly because of fuel and parts shortages.

Russia's air force said British and Norwegian Tornado and F-16 jets shadowed the Russian aircraft. France said it had been informed about the exercises.

I have to wonder how many of those keels were laid before 1990. Any ships left from the Soviet era are nearing the end of useful life.
So Putin wants to strut the world like King S**t? He won't for long, not with Russia's demographics so deep in the hole he has to declare public holidays for procreation. Naval powers need large, young populations to fill crews.

What a laughable waste of the Russian Peoples' money. What was the military or political purpose of this nonsense? Two bombers - they'd never have made it off the tarmac in a real shootout. And their Naval vessels - easy targets, every one - assuming they can get out to open waters, before which they have to get out the Baltic, Black and/or White seas. I have had to - been forced to - alter my opinion of Mr. Putin. I'm afraid he is just another in a very long line of dangeroud Russian fools. What a wasted talent. What a wasted opportunity. Ah well, back to business as usual, I suppose.

What about RAF jets scrambled daily to patrol Russian Bear 'planes? Four times as many incursions into UK airspace last year.

Look people the RAF are only there to ensure that the Russian ships held loosly together by rust donk sink, they could then radio in for a chopper to pick up surviors.
Putin is a prat I wouldnt even place him third against China as the next big threat, does any of their aging technology still work???

What happened to Putin's boast post Beslan that he'd attack terrorists anywhere in the world? He's in bed with Iran, and a sop to other Islamist nuthouses.

"What a laughable waste of the Russian Peoples' money"

So different from our own beloved government.
Silence what is your evidence that the Iranians are engaged in supporting terrorism? Now if the question was if the British were supporting Islamic terroriam there is no possible dispute that we are, but there is little evidence of Iran doing so & none of Russia.

Less reported, but much more dangerous, are our generals who want us to launch nuclear first strikes.

Hopefully the next Russian demonstration of power will be in the Mediterranean of the Israeli coast..

8. Shut up. There are corpses all over Afghanistan and Iarq killed by Iranian built bombs. And your point that the US and UK are involved in terror - idiotic.
12

Neil,

Glasgow 23/01/2008 13:44:14
A relatively reasoned response Yams ;-)

I think there may just possibly be a considerable number of corpses in Iraq & Afghansitan killed by UK & US bombs, there certainly are in Yugoslavia, Kosovo, Croatia etc. When you are willing to speak against terrorism as such, rather than supporting it when our government do it, then you may have something to contribute.

The Russians are betting on Hillary and knows our military assets will be either scrapped or sold. Also that if she wins, appeasement is the watchword.

Neil,

Since Hilary's husband is a war criminal who assisted in genocide & child sex slavery in Kosovo & Croatia I fear she will not be the pushover you fear.

In fact Ron Paul seems to be the only one we could rely on not to start bombing civilians. The conflict between "right" & "left" is not as simplistic as the labels suggest.

Silence of the Yams,

12. Rubbish. Al Qaeda and Taleban militants are combatants out to kill anyone that gets in their way. If they get killed - good! The coalition do not deliberately target civilians like the evil enemy you appease.

I had a vision of this move many years ago and wrote a piece about it. France has just entered into this alliance because she's caught up in the circus routinue of impending doom. She's like a feathered dame pretending to be crushed by an elephant as the whole world feigns to be shocked by the sight of it all. Russia's a fitting ring leader and the middle east, but predominantly Pakistan/Indian are more than appropriate pachyderms. And to this I say, "Jesus is Lord!"

OK wait a minute why are russians in the bay of biscay?
How did they get past customs? Has any one checked where the german army is?

Don't make a sound Connieb they don't know somethings wrong. The life of a pachyderm seems so bountiful they have an extra limb with the greatest control. You got to take him by the trunk and slap it, if you want the funk

Why do you hope that? That's the bailiwick of the mighty US Sixth fleet. The Russians don't have any aircraft carriers. What are they going to do? Sail up and down the Israeli coast shouting insults?
