NEW figures released by the city council show that 92.7 per cent of street light repairs are made within seven days.
This is slightly below the national average but an improvement on the 85.1 per cent figure which the city was achieving in 2001/02.

Earlier this year the Evening News revealed city leaders have been landed with a £7.9 million bill after it emerged more than 5000 lampposts must be replaced within five years.

The council has already replaced 900 unsafe street lamps following a city-wide survey.

I don't know how it is news to the council.

Papers put to the council, in 1996, stated that the service life a a lamp standard was in excess of 100 years compared to their design life of 30 years (less for the older stock).

limited testing of lighting stock has been used where types of columns have "failed" (fallen down) to check the structure of equipment, but the programme of replacement never comes close to meeting the required rate.

I would therefore suggest the statement in the article is changed from "landed with a £7.9M Bill" to "accumulated a £7.9M bill due to underfunding"

A year or two back I reported 3 lights out on my street. It took months to get bulbs replaced and I have to write to my MSP in the end!
