THE Liberal Democrat leade, Nick Clegg, yesterday called on the Government to offer more than rhetoric in its efforts to end the conflict in Darfur.
At a rally to mark the fifth anniversary of the start of the war, Mr Clegg said the prime minister needed to put more pressure on China to use its influence over the Khartoum regime.

"I would not want to denigrate the rhetorical efforts of Gordon Brown, but I am afraid people want to see action rather than more rhetoric," he told demonstrators.

"He has been extremely reluctant for a long time to say anything controversial to the Chinese.

"But the fact is the Chinese government, as host of the Olympics, has a new responsibility for human rights."

Yesterday's demonstration, which saw around 3,000 protesters gather outside the Sudanese Embassy in London, was part of a global day of action for Darfur, organised by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and the Save Darfur Coalition.

Bring back Vince Cable.

At least he gave the impression of leading.

Clegg is a disaster from start to finish.

Mashimaro. Yes indeed it which is why the Chinese want a piece of the action. Irrespective of human rights.

#4 As you have probably guessed by now we don't let human rights interfere with business. That way everyone benefits.

Let's have the truth,

Criticism of China is:

1. Jealousy of their success

2. An attempt to camouflage the guilt of past and current actions by those who criticise.

3. Bloody stupid

4. Bigotry and rascist

o Lhtt you consider the fact that I can critisize China makes me
1 Jealous of their success
2 An attempt to cover actions past and present
3 Bloody Stupid
4 Bigotry and Racist.
Where do I begin, oh yes How about the fact that 1.3bn people have no say in the rubnning of their country.
More executions than the rest of the world put together.
Financing other regimes with equally poor records on the way they treat their countrymen/
As for racist.... BO@@OCKS. I have no issue with the Chinese people, merely their thuggish and stupid regime.
Mashimaro. Even suppose it is all about the oil, why dont China try to HELP the situation?

Biker: We don't do business that way. It's a simple moral stand. We go in and build. I suppose you'd like to see the PLA tanks rumbling into Darfur then everyone can say we invaded so the whole west can try to invade us.
Don't be so stupid.

Biker,

Ayr 15/04/2008 12:58:38
Mashimaro How dare you talk about morals after the rubbish you have spouted on this page. The very idea that China would take a moral stance on anything related to human rights is laughable at best.
The only stupid comment on this thread belongs to you.

Biker - so many answers, so little time.
1. How dare you try to force your morals on to us. You are no longer our colonial masters. Oh, btw, I see you've been very quiet on Colonel Younghusband and his massacres in Tibet.
2. So do you expect we should be like the benevolent UKUS and arm one side against the other? Let the killing continue, right? Please...
3) Four million drop in the Iraqi population - well done, well done, obviously Saddam just wasn't killing them fast enough.
4) If our products and our Olympics are not good enough for you, I would urge you to protest most strongly about taking our money, dude.
