A TEAM of politicians is to take to the streets of Leith in a bid to free the area of its grimy reputation.
Senior members of the Labour Party will hit the streets on May 26 armed with litter clearing equipment and hope to encourage members of the community to help the mission.

MSP Malcolm Chisholm and MP Mark Lazarowicz, both Edinburgh North and Leith ward representatives, along with Leith councillor Gordon Munro, will be involved in the clean-up.

Mr Chisholm said: "Action on all fronts is required to rid Leith of litter. We are doing our bit today to keep Leith beautiful."

And Mr Lazarowicz added: "As an MP I see a growing interest from communities who want to take action to improve their own area. A litter pick-up is a very practical expression of that commitment, and a reminder to local councils of what they should be doing to keep their local areas clean and tidy."

They will be joined by community groups including Greener Leith and Leith Open Space.

The Labour party will have to do a heck of a sight more than pick up a few wrappers in a publicity stunt to make up for years of mismanagement and corruption they bred in our country.

They are the litter - let them pick themselves up !

This is all very well in the short term but it won't stop the habitual litter droppers.
Why don't councillors do some research in the countries that manage to keep their streets clean?
I was in Canada recently and there was hardly any litter on the streets. The hedgerows and trees weren't adorned with sweet wrappers and polythene bags etc. I didn't see empty cans of beer etc left on people's windowsills or thrown into gardens.
Why is this country such a slum?
It is not the plastic bag to blame either. It is the lazy, brainless litter louts who are at fault. They need educated.

AA - I disagree. A bit of litter doesn't really matter. Nazi Germany was litter free.

What does matter is this tram business. i'd rather there was a mountain of Dominoes Pizza cartons, crisp packets, juice cans, placcy bags, Maccie D's cartons etc than the trams.#

Lest we forget - Nazi Germany was pretty big on trams.

One of the first real bit of politics from the Labour Party since last May. No negative insults or jibes at the SNP, just a simple but worthwhile exercise which will help the community. Well done.

Who says Labour politicians are good for nothing?
Mind you they are expensive bin men!

Its a combination of 3 things. 1. Useless scaffies, who seem completely incapabale of actually cleaning. 2. Useless management, who seem incapable of ensuring their employees actually clean. 3. The large numbers of parasitic scum who, like in every other aspect of their unproductive, pointless lives, have been raised to expect someone else to clean up at their a***s.

#3 R Corbett: Are you the nutter on the bus that Jasper Carrott used to go on about?

Ah, Jasper Carrott and his "hilarious" examination of mental illness. Wouldn't get away with that these days though, not least because mental illness is actually serious and debilitating, and no laughing matter.

So, in summary, if you're looking for a loony tunes chucklehead - try number 2. Or look in the mirror, you chunwit
