SCOTTISH Labour has lost nearly a quarter of its membership since the start of the war in Iraq, and looks set to be overtaken by the SNP as the country's biggest party.
New figures, to be released this week, show the former dominant force in Scottish politics now has just 18,000 fully paid-up members, compared to the list of 23,000 in 2002.

Membership has slumped by nearly half since the high point in the mid-Nin
eties when, on the cusp of power and led by a popular Tony Blair, the party had more than 30,000 signed-up members.

However, the latest drop in Labour's figures means the SNP could soon become the largest mass membership party in the country.

It has 14,000 members, up from 9,500 in 2003. If the current trends continue, the SNP would overtake Labour in 2010, in what would be a further major shift of power in Scottish politics.

Labour chiefs claimed last night their membership was "stabilising", but party sources warned that membership was haemorrhaging in many parts of the country, following the party's defeat in the 2007 election.

They blame the fall-out from Iraq, and the growing disgruntlement in Scotland over New Labour's performance in government both in Edinburgh and London.

The figures come as the party prepares for its annual Scottish conference in Aviemore in two weeks.

Is that all! Labour has abandoned it's founding principles and betrayed it's core support. I hope the figures represent the periods from 1960-present. As only the most ardent seeker of grace and favour could possibly still be backing them currently.

Scotland needs rid of them and the career politicians they have become. Then perhaps in an independent Scotland the party could once again get back on it's knees. Until then , their humped.

Labour had a vested interest in poverty. The poor however preferred the skill competence and honesty of the SNP. The right wing media are now in a froth but the people of Scotland are awakening to the new reality and reject the cavalier clowns in the Unionist parties. The SNP are truly the peoples' party.

1# Absolutely right. The unions are about the only thing keeping them afloat now and there's little chance of them increasing funding for a failed party.

But, even the TUC and top union leaders have been sucked in to the power magnet that is westminster. I think the RMT have been the only ones to stand against the party and for its members.

The best news about this disgusting Britnat Political Party who merely are there to serve their masters in London and line their own pockets.

Its Time for the Scottish Government to reinforce the fact that every Scottish Person who is a paid up member of the Britnat Unions is fully entitled to demand their contributions are not in anyway used to fund the Westminster Controlled Scottish New Labour Party, and have Audit Scotland check that they make the fact open to all members and that their funds are sticking strictly to Scottish Law.

Brown is trying to limit the amount of money any party can recieve from one particular donor to 25,000 quid. His goal is to try stop funding to the Scottish Peoples Party to ensure it makes it difficult to fight and win again the next Scottish Elections. I hope the likes of Sir Tom Hunter,Brian Souter, Tom Farmer and the rest of our great entrepeneurs back their fellow Scots by kicking in enough money to win control of our country back.

The most recent opinion poll published in today’s Sunday Times suggests that the SNP is now 8 points ahead of the Labour Party in Scottish voter intentions.

Alex Salmond has an approval rating of +53%, compared to Ms Alexander’s score of –22%.

Oh, and Wendy appears to have some explanation to do regarding expenses she has claimed whilst planning her campaign to succeed Jack McConnell.

A good day for the cringers to hide their heads back their duvets.

I think the public have turned away from the 'perception politics' of Labour and those in the media who support them. People no longer believe the spin and are looking for something more substantial than mud-slinging. This is reflected in the current support for Alex Salmond, who the Sunday Herald reports has a 75% lead over Wendy Alexander, as well as the SNP polling 39/40 (constituency/regional list) to Labour's 31 on the constituency list and only a 1% increase on the regional list. If I'm not mistaken, the SNP have consistently polled well above their share of the vote last May over the last few months.

Referring to those who still 'Pay their dues'their only useful and meaningful purpose to the Party it would seem more appropriate and true that they be referred to 'Inmates' a much more fitting description than 'members' - or so it would seem, and then they will seem more at home when the corrupt EC - the possible saviour of this New Labour crowd - if there is one, but hopefully not - enough is too much!

So this means that the principled labour supporters have been leaving, and those left didn't have the integrity to stand against the war.

SNP growing? ha! It's a single issue party which doesn't even stand strongly by its issue, as it's led by a self proclaimed monarchist, and is already being tainted by sleaze.

Here's the solution: Unite the Lib Dems, Tories and Greens (I wonder how long that would last...)

This article is confusing?

The same journalist has another piece in today's SoS about his opinion on the present state of Salmond's minority SNP administration? You can't have it both ways?

The SNP honeymoon will eventually come to an end and the main beneficiary will be the Labour Party in Scotland.

Scots Labour have never attempted to appease the Nationalists like the desperate indigenous Tories
who, 10 years after being led to the edge of political extinction, have still been unable to climb out of a grave of their own digging!

Your House of Cards is collapsing around you.

Voters are deserting in their thousands, and members are leaving in their droves.

Allegations of corruption and sleaze will simply just not go away.

Your party is politically, morally and financially bankrupt.

It used to be a mark of shame in this country for people to admit that they at one time voted Tory.

Whereas that has hardly changed now, it is becoming increasingly true that to admit to being a Labour voter is being viewed in exactly the same way.

No matter how many times the Cringers deny the facts, and scratch, bite and howl at the Moon, your empty vessel has already hit the rocks, and those of you who decide not to jump overboard, are destined to be drowned.

I think that you will find that membership of the Labour Party is incompatible with concurrent membership of the SNP.

Should your little arrangement become known to the SNP, you would of course be expelled forthwith from the party.

However, it does seem somehow indicative of the lack of moral standing of those who remain with the Labour Party, that any of them could consider joining the SNP, whilst at the same time contributing three times as much financially to the dark forces ranged against Scotland’s prosperity.

It would appear that your heid is up your backside.

The Labour Party was created to fight the industrialists and landowners in order to secure rights for the working classe. Now their leaders have taken over the role of the people they should be fighting. Was there ever a more unlikely leader of the Labour Party than Tony Blair, and as for front benchers such as Ed Balls and his money grabbing wife, they have no interest in anybdy except themselves. Far too many of the present government are as far removed from the reality of every-day life as the wealthy Tories, and whatsmore, have no real interest either as long as they can continue in their feather bedded existence. Time the Labour Party was renamed the 'Stuff you Party'.

Keep taking the denial tablets and wearing the dark shades, and hope that this is all a bad dream.

The headline of the main story in the Sunday Times Scotland is “SNP opens record lead over Labour”

So, go on then poisoned dwarves, manufacture an excuse to vote against the most popular First Minister we have ever had, whether it be LIT, Trump, Aviemore, or even the Lewis wind farm.

Force a vote of no confidence in the minority Scottish Government, and face, yet again, the ridicule of the body politic as you and your poodle cohorts abstain when it comes to the crunch.

Can someone provide links to this report on "SNP record lead over Labour" as that is blatently wrong if it's using YouGov polls.

Also this "40% of Labour voters support independence" as that goes starkly against most figures that show support for independence at 12-13% outside SNP supporters.

No 44 has alluded to the refutation of your “bully” comment.

Your use of the term “Nazi” in describing the ethos of the football club from which my moniker has been borrowed is despicable.

During the Second World War this particular football club adopted the playing colours of khaki, in respect of those who were laying down their lives in opposition to the Nazi threat.

Your smear in this respect appears to be born out of ignorance, spite and jealously.

As far as trade union membership is concerned, the SNP actively encourage such participation.

What cannot be endorsed however, is concurrent membership of political parties opposed to the furtherance of Scotland’s prosperity.

In this respect your performance is reminiscent of the sainted Wendy’s performances at Holyrood.

# 52 The print edition of SoS does carry Sunday Time Poll figures but tucked away in side column in middle of paper.

However it does not cover the latest Labour expenses scandals involving Trish Godman in Sunday Herald and Wendy Alexander in Sunday Times.
49

Linda,

Edinburgh 16/03/2008 15:58:04
SCOTLAND'S DEPUTY presiding officer has pocketed up to £30,000 of public money to cover her "hotel" costs despite the fact she did not stay in any. Labour MSP Trish Godman was living in her fraudster son's flat at a rate of around £100 a night ... but claiming hotel expenses from the Scottish parliament.

The deal, which was approved by Holyrood bosses, resulted in Godman racking up the highest "hotel" bill of any MSP since 1999.

The exposé is another hammer blow for Labour.

Godman, who as deputy presiding officer is one of Holyrood's most senior politicians, is recorded as having claimed around £30,000 in "hotel" costs between 2001 and 2006.

But the Sunday Herald can reveal that the Labour MSP did not stay in hotels during this period.

The scandal can be traced to the purchase in 2001 of a lucrative flat on Holyrood Road by Godman's son, Gary Mulgrew. The banker bought the property for £245,000 without a mortgage, months after he and two colleagues had defrauded their employers of £3.7 million in an Enron-linked scam.

Mulgrew and his fellow conspirators, who were dubbed the NatWest Three, were each jailed for 37 months in Texas last November after pleading guilty to one count of wire fraud.

In September 2001, soon after Mulgrew bought the flat, which is yards from the Scottish parliament, Godman entered into a rental agreement with her son and stayed in the property when she was in Edinburgh.

She was unable to claim rent on the flat as her primary residence in Glasgow was too close to Holyrood to qualify for the subsidy. She was instead entitled to an overnight expenses allowance that permits MSPs to recoup £110.45 a night. In 2001, the rate was £83.97.

FORMER BANK of Scotland governor Sir Peter Burt has waded in to the furore over the SNP government's local income tax (LIT).

He has now called on finance secretary John Swinney to reconsider the local property tax; a system that Burt himself proposed back in 2006 in a review he carried out for the Scottish Executive.

Burt, who reviewed the current system on behalf of the then Labour administration, said it would be "very difficult" to introduce a LIT without the co-operation of HM Revenue and Customs. HMRC looks unwilling to get involved.

It comes amid a growing business backlash to Swinney's proposals. It recently emerged that the estimated cost to employers would be up to £60 million upfront and then up to £18m a year.

THE SCOTTISH government has been criticised over talks with a controversial party donor on drugs policy.

Bus tycoon Brian Souter's charity was granted a private meeting with an SNP minister on the new administration's "pro-abstinence" strategy.

The same organisation, the Souter Charitable Trust (SCT), was linked to the £1 million campaign in 2000 against the promotion of homosexuality in schools

Green MSP Patrick Harvie said: "Brian Souter's donation has already tilted SNP transport policy in favour of bus operators and against the travelling public. Ministers should be very wary about letting him tinker with social policy too. If the history of drugs policy over the last 30 years shows one thing, it's that just say no' just doesn't work. I hope the SNP understand that even if Brian Souter doesn't."

May we please see Blair tried as the common war criminal he is. He has breached the Geneva convention and International Law, he has to be brought to trial, he is no better than the war criminals we are still looking for.

Membership of Labour has gone down by 50% since he invaded Iraq. Labour now deserves nothing less than extinction, as these fat greedy crooks voted for a war to kill hundreds of thousands whilst contemplating their John Lewis list, Liebour make me sick.

Presumably you will have AMs list their so you can post the direct quotes for us, like a good wee unionist soldier. Were you also born in Northern Ireland and are agnostic with a catholic wife and have a business that allows you free time to be on line night and day compiling lists like you were trained to do by the KGB?

The Pyjama People are becoming increasingly paranoid and rabid in their behaviour. The list of monikers you people use must be massive by now and it must be increasingly difficult to remember who you are when you are on line, still it provides entertainment for us here on earth.

You have become quite a ridiculous troll. Is it not time to switch to your English Voice or even the Cross Dresser one was more original.

Your constant posting of bare faced lies just has people scrolling past your mad ramblings. Except me I just love winding you up and exposing your paranoid madness. Just because you are paranoid doesn't mean the bar stewards are not out to get you.

I read that Jack Nicholson is doing a remake of One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest, you and the rest of your Pyjama Peoples Party should be in line for a few parts there as extras. Enjoy the fishing.

How come nationalists do so well north of the border, when their comrades south of the border are only on 1%?

I agree with karinxx you need to get your personal details of this forum. Use the "Report unsuitable," there are some very disturbed people on here 24/7. If you don't believe me just look at #86/88/73 etc. quite quite bonkers. Good luck.

Talking of disturbed people:

Gordon Brown ignored Tony Blair's top aide
By Patrick Hennessy, Political Editor
Last Updated: 2:39am GMT 16/03/2008

Tony Blair's chief aide during his time in Downing Street has said that Gordon Brown walked past him every week for more than 10 years without once saying hello.

Have your say: Should Tony Blair be made EU president?
Three Line Whip: Brown and Blair rift went on for over 12 years
UK politics in full | Labour politics in full
The comments by Jonathan Powell, the former prime minister's chief of staff, provide first-hand confirmation of the ill-feeling and bitterness between the Blair and Brown camps during Labour's first decade in power.
Mr Powell's No 10 office was directly outside Mr Blair's "den", and Mr Brown, as Chancellor, had to walk past his desk to get to the then prime minister's room for weekly meetings.

Asked in a magazine interview about rumours that Mr Brown failed to greet him for 10 years, Mr Powell replied: "That was true. In fact it was closer to 12-and-a-half years."

He compared the relationship between Mr Brown and Mr Blair to a dysfunctional marriage, adding: "I've been divorced once myself, I know how these can go. There was lots of yelling and shouting, and lots of periods when it was going swimmingly, so there were ups and downs. It was all very emotional, very intense and the dominating relationship in many ways."

The nadir was probably between 2004 and 2006, during which time Mr Brown is said to have told Mr Blair: "There is nothing you could ever say to me that I could ever believe."

I'm afraid I just do not believe this poll,if so,it would mean that 2/3rd's of Scotland believe in the Union after the Labour debacle, what has been done in such a short time, the electorate now finally understanding the McCrone Report, the general public knowledge that their is plenty Oil left under the North Sea and the list goes on.
The point is
Maybe the voting at the election was rigged, every pole is rigged,or a negative effect by the most biased press anywhere in the democratic western world.

or

The electorate of Scotland are the dumbest sons of b*tches between here and North Korea.

Either way it is one or the other.
