Labour bids to regain Asian vote

JIM Murphy, the Secretary of State for Scotland, last night began Labour's efforts to woo back the Asian community from the SNP.
At an awards evening for Asian businessmen, Mr Murphy announced he would be setting up a panel of Asian business people to feed into the efforts to help Scotland through the recession and grow the economy.

But a source close to the minister said
the initiative was part of efforts to "bring home" the Asian vote, especially Muslims, after strenuous efforts by the SNP to win their hearts and minds.

The Nationalists' effort in recent times has been controversially led by their Glasgow Central candidate, Osama Saeed, who has set up the Scottish Islamic Foundation. Question marks have been raised about the speed with which his foundation received money from the Scottish Government to organise an Islamic festival, although there was no evidence presented of ministerial interference.

Labour had the first Muslim MP in the UK with Mohammad Sarwar in Glasgow Central, and it also expects to have the first Muslim women elected to Westminster in English seats after the next election. But the SNP has won plaudits with the election of Bashir Ahmad on the Glasgow list as the first Muslim MSP.

The source close to Mr Murphy said: "We have to recognise that the SNP have been very active in wooing the Asian vote.

"The Asian communities are very strong, both politically and economically, and in the past Labour has been very effective at winning them over and working with them. However, we recognise in Scotland that we need to try to win many of them back to the Labour Party."

Funny how both the SNP are so interested in the muslim vote.

The white working class are abandoning the policies of Old Labour for the more right wing New Labour-ish policies.

The SNP need to rely on muslims to support their far left policies.

Some bitter muslims can be relied on to join the fifth column SNP with their pro-Palestinian, anti-Isreal, anti-British stand.

You don't see Salmond even bothering to speak to the Hindu community.

Not "asian" enough for you then Salmond?

I wonder if you are even interested in Scotland other than to be part of the Maddox/Scotsman/Labour Party "knock the SNP does'nt matter if its logical or even fair , or even good for Scotland ,just knock the SNP every chance you get" team!

The people to whom you refer are hard working, intelligent, and happy. They come from strong reigious backgrounds, have extended families stretching back into strong communities, and are now an integral part of our nation. Their politics are not the preserve of any one political party and this very fact precludes any political party from scooping them all into their net. Above all they are free Scots men and women well able to make up their own minds in their own country.

Actually, I feel that this is all part of a worrying trend and that we might become like the USA. There, politicians target the black vote, the Jewish vote and now, apparently, the Latino vote.

This tends to lead to distorted policies just to ensure that a particular group is satisfied. Can anybody pretend that US policy on Israel/Palestine is not influenced by fear of the reaction of the "Jewish vote" in the USA.

As regulars will know, I am of the opinion that Nationalism (in a Scottish context at least) is a self serving creed whose supporters can't see past their blind faith in separatism as a magic cure-all for perceived chippy grievances.

However, fair play to the SNP if they've managed to present themselves as a modern, inclusive, social democratic party to such an extent that Asian voters are flocking to them.

#19 ....what are you talking about "a self serving creed etc"...as a nationalist I want my country to function like any other country as a britnat you want my country to not to function at all..the only people who are self serving are you britnats.

Whether the bnp like it or not the asian community exist as part of the scottish community and are very welcome to take part in the debate and vote for the future of our country.

One can't help but think with the ferocity that the political parties are chasing the Muslim vote that this community is more interested in it's own needs, not really what you call fully integrated does it?

#17

All the parties are chasing the ethnic votes. The logical conclusion of this and if multiculturalism continues is that white people will have to vote BNP.

I don't want to ethnicised. I see myself as a Scotsman but if it get's like what it is like down south, it will eventually turn out that way.

It's not what people want to hear but our country is devolving into a cold war of competing groups fighting for jobs, housing and government services. We are not one nation but a divided nation.

It will be interesting to see who comes on these pages with racist comments against Labour for their efforts in this direction or will it prove to be just the SNP who get attacked for doing this kind of thing?
