Labour Party facing financial meltdown

INSIDE WESTMINSTER

MONEY is too tight to mention. At least for the Labour Party – which, according to insiders, is simply in the red.

As if it were not bad enough that the UK economy has been described as even more vulnerable to the credit crunch than other de
veloped economies, the governing party's own finances also appear to be in a mess.

So much so that there is no guarantee that Labour's auditor, Horwath Clark Whitehill, will sign off the accounts in three weeks' time. It will only give its seal of approval to the accounts if it deems the Labour Party is a "viable going concern".

This means that, theoretically, the party could go bankrupt under Gordon Brown's stewardship. It has to repay £7 million in loans by July and another £6 million by the end of the year – unless it can convince lenders to hold off calling them in.

One source with close links to Downing Street and activists has mooted the unlikely idea of Mr Brown being forced to stand down as Labour leader if the party goes into administration.

Meanwhile, even if the party had the money, Labour would not be inclined to spend too much on the Henley by-election, to be held on 26 July.

The southern English seat is such a Conservative stronghold – about to be vacated by Boris Johnson, who won the London mayoralty from Ken Livingstone – that Labour insiders admit their candidate will probably lose the deposit.

The famous election that never was also cost the party around £2 million, spent largely on leaflets for marginal constituencies.

In the midst of the meltdown, the Prime Minister has not, apparently, relinquished his authoritarianism. He has admonished the "freelancing" attempts by John Hutton, the Business Secretary and Jack Straw, the Justice Secretary, for hinting to voters that there would be a retreat on fuel and vehicle excise duty taxes.

It is reminiscent of his recent behaviour, when according to a No10 mole, he phoned Alan Johnson, the Health Secretary, at 7am to ask him why the Today programme had flagged up an interview with him when it had not been "cleared" with the PM. A weary Mr Johnson replied that he had not yet even left home.

It turns out Today had an interview with Alan Johnston, the Scottish journalist who had been held hostage in Gaza.

Kharma.

Incompetent bankrupt political party goes bankrupt.

Great.

Only problem is that Maggie Thatcher/John Major/David Cameron's Conservative Party are coming back, and their CV isn't exactly sparkling in the economic competence department.

Emmigration anyone ?

If Labour become bankrupt then they are not allowed into the British or Scottish Parliament.

The SNP will be able to muster up enough votes to push through a referendum on Independence.

A Better Way,

So Gordon Brown has bankrupted the Westminster System and the Labour Party. So much for his so called great performance as chancellor of London.Of course he is bankrupt of ideas in todays financial woes. Its quite easy being a successful chancellor when all you have to do id spend spend spend the money built up by the former government. This is the man who introduced ppi which is reckoned to have left the uk with a debt that doesnt appear on the books of some 278billion plus Wendy's 22 billion. Dont worry he also broke his golden rule and has us up for 120 billion on top of the rest.

Thats why he is trying to divert the peoples attention away from the financial disasters to 42 days of being assumed guilty until proven innocent. Six weeks in jail for something you are only suspected of. Now theres not much doubt that to be even held you are sure to be sacked from your job, your kids are going to suffer at school, you could lose your business, wife and whatever else. As someone said on the telly this is merely a distraction to the governments loss of credability and has absolutely nothing to do with terrorism. Surely a scumbag like Brown is really showing us exactly what a lowlife he is. It has taken a thousand years, to build up the rights of everyone to be assumed innocent until PROVEN GUILTY. This knucklehead doesnt even care about the peoples hard fought civil rights, as long as he gets to stay in Downing Street and to top it all off he wasnt even elected to the position by the People of the three countries.

The Hamish McDonnell story about the ministerial car really is pathetic. Hamish if this is the kind of story you aspire to you should bury your head in shame. Have a good look at yourself in the mirror. No self respecting journalist would stoop so low as to write stuff like that. How about trying something on really important world events, or are you incapable of that? Or maybe there is an excuse for you if the owners and the editor force you into writing this nonsense. If that is the case you should find another job.

Couldn't agree more. A pathetic piece of writing and a pathetic "story". Only shows the standard of "newspaper" this is, no onder it has falling sales.

After learning about the exploits of two Tory M.E.P.'s who unashamedly claimed £1.2 million between them in expenses from the European Parliament, perhaps the Labour Party should be seeking financial advice from these two carpet baggers to clear the Party's debts!

#32,

I'm not so sure there is 'absolutely no chance' of the Labour Party becoming bankrupt but even if things don't get that bad there are a number of other problems that arise. How are they going to fight the European election when they're strapped for cash?

Following a bad result in the European election there may be a call for a change of leadership. Can they afford any leadership challenges? Labour's financial problems are just another nail in the coffin of the Labour movement that Tony Blair and New Labour treated with such contempt in the name of 'modernisation'.

Faced with the collapse of the Labour party and the fact that the next Westminster election looks like being won in the South of England, the best we can do is return as many SNP MPs to Westminster and batton down the hatches.

u cannot really blame brown for the financial mess of labour this is the legacy of blair and his dodgy donations and loans that will need repaying sometime.

only thing u can blame brown for is his sheer incompetence as prime minister. who would want to fund a party almost certain to go into meltdown at the next election.

"Margaret Thatcher ordered her ministers to seek cuts of up to a seventh of the Scottish Office budget as the nation's economy was in acute difficulties, according to official government documents

But the release of the 24-year-old Conservative government papers this week was held up for nearly two years by the Scotland Office, as part of the UK Government, which sought to block publication under the Freedom of Information Act."

Why were labour trying to hide what the tories wanted to do to scotland.

And why were they allowed to delay this until after last yrs election.

corruption in the unionist parties again.

In most quarters,it has been established for some time that this crew(spew Labour), is morally, bankrupt.
As well as being bankrupt in political thought they have now gone NAP by taking their party to the verge of financial ruin.
Being a paid-up trade unionist I resent this gaggle of Carpetbaggers squandering our donations, betraying the movement and misrepresenting the voters.
They can no longer flog Titles and peerages to bolster their funds, soon they will turn their sights on the tax-payer.
Wake up voters! Identify this band of tax hikers for what they are....WASTERS.
How can they run our country? when they cannot manage their own finances.

The release of these documents show that Scots are punished for not voting as the rest of the UK votes, a trend that seems to have continued if the last block grant is considered.

I hope that Alex Salmond gets his twenty plus MPs. I'd like to know that when David Cameron looks up from the dispatch box he's confronted with a large number of SNP MPs.

We are going to be confronted with an Eton-led and very English Westminster which will have to balance it's alleged unionism with the increasingly anti-Scottish right.

Yesterday I posted at 38 on the 'PM refuses to back down.....' thread, along the lines of the Scotsman and its levels of censorship, and why it hadn't mentioned this subject of the Oil.
A couple of posts later at 40 or 42, a poster produced a list of other newspapers and publications mostly down South, that had run with the story.

Such censorship happening in a Scottish newspaper, is very sad, and not a little worrying.

Had a little time today and found several references to NL not being able to sign off the books come the end of May and there is talk of forming a back-dated limited liability company to escape the creditors !

http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2008/may/29/labour
Senior officials in the Labour party, including Gordon Brown, could become personally liable for millions of pounds in debt unless new donors can be found within weeks, the Guardian has learned.

The party has five weeks to find £7.45m to pay off loans to banks and wealthy donors recruited by Lord Levy, Tony Blair's former chief fundraiser, or become insolvent. A further £6.2m will have to be repaid by Christmas - making £13.65m in all. The sum amounts to two-thirds of the party's annual income from donations.

The figures are a conservative estimate as they do not include interest that will also have to be paid. A Labour source said that although the total debt was listed as £17.8m on the Electoral Commission website, the true level, with interest, was nearer to £24m.

The possibility that party officials and members of its national executive committee could become liable is being taken seriously by union leaders, and has been underlined by the decision of equity fund chairman David Pitt-Watson not to accept the post as Labour's general secretary............more via the link.

More on Mr Pitts-Watson here.....

Tribune today has a dramatic article about Labour Party attempts to reschedule up to £14 million of loans, and that NEC members could be personally liable for the debts if legal action is taken. Apparently a last resort of converting the party into a limited company is being considered by some, to protect the NEC members from liability!

"I mean the Scotsman obviously doesn't want posts on its own website 'advertising' other newspapers does it? "

So the Scotsman never quotes other newspapers, broadcast organisations etc. in any of its articles ?
It was a post, in which a list of different publications was shown, not just one.
On a comments section like this, it would hardly rate as 'advertising' in anyone's book.
Even with dwindling readership, it's highly unlikely 'the Scotsman' would have felt in any way threatened by it.
Let's be realistic, it's not exactly a convincing argument, and it is censorship.

Why aren't comments allowed on the Tory MEP sleaze article? Its a legitimate political article and I'm surprised comments aren't allowed on it.

I can understand why the Scotsman hasn't allowed posts on its Alex Salmond car article because it is a bit of a non-story and I'm sure there would be a lot of criticism from people for it (although it does highlight the hypocrisy of politicians to a certain extent - telling people to walk and not use their cars for short trips and then doing exactly the opposite - although I'm sure it was for security reasons...), but why no comments on the Tory MEP article?

Anyone who has been around politicians a little while these days (clearly the guy who wrote the Alex and his Auto Horror is a bit of a rookie) knows that they don't walk about anymore. Their car is their fortress in these disturbing times where security is a constant issue with the minders.
I wouldn't be surprised that Salmond's driver is also packing a pistol. Political "drivers" on this side of the pond sure do.
The fact that the Scotsman editors locked the story is another hint that it has dodgy written all over it.
If some unionist loon jumped Alex the night he was supposed to walk instead of drive, the fertilizer would have hit the fan big time.

Labour's past catching up with it big time. How can Brown claim to be "prudent" when even his own party is at the pawnbroker's? The claim that he knew nothing of dodgy donations which have helped to bring about the state of affairs is about as convincing as one of Wendy's Whoppers. This is the man who claimed to have his finger on the financial pulse. Everywhere except in your own back yard Gordon? I don't think so.

In amongst all this incompetence and pfroligacy with other peoples' money we also get an illustration of his tenuous grasp on reality with the 42 day carry on and the Question Time assertion that he is just trying to be macho and how how much in control he is. His manoeuvres are now so transparent they are laughable. Like the other day when he was trying to laud the contribution of the "Ahmy". Not a pleasant place to be when you're not only trying to emulate the Blessed Tone's popularity, duplicity and Englishness but you're trying to get to grips with which way's up.

indeed, I noticed last nights Newsnight "Scotland" lead story was a fictional piece on how we would cope if oil ran out today... an odd response to analysis that shows Scotland's oil reserves, in revenue tax value alone, are worth c. 6 times at today's money the
entire Marshall plan budget.... I wonder what that money could do for Scotland?

This is a slightly modified post from yesterday, I share your feelings about this newspaper that calls itself 'the Scotsman', but which wouldn't run this major story about Scotland's Oil wealth, in spite of its obvious importance to the country.
How very sad to see such levels of censorship control in place, within Scotland's so called national newspaper, even more especially in recent months.
We have all witnessed those stories published on this site, not having any comments section, and more often than not they have been articles connected with Wendy Alexander, and New Labour.
This time it's not just a comments section that isn't in evidence, it's the story itself. No articles, or comments being made by the paper about the oil deposits, which will last for around another 40 years plus, or of the incredible revenues that will be generated in that period, which would set up an Independent Scotland for generations.
Did Brown and Wendy have clandestine little meetings with this paper's owners, and possibly those of the Herald, to persuade them to minimise, or even withhold, any information which might put a positive aspect on an Independent Scottish Economy ?
The Newspapers down South have seen fit to publish these very interesting facts, obviously deeming them to be highly newsworthy.
So today what excuses do the 'journalists' at the Scotsman have to offer ?
Is the 'Use of official car trips up 'green' Salmond' story really so much more newsworthy, than this one about the reality, and true value, of Scotland's oil deposits ? How could they possibly have completely ignored it ?
Are the people working for 'the Scotsman' really serious journalists, or are they simply propagandists, just publishing what they think will benefit the Union, leaving out anything that might be to the contrary.
Censorship by omission ?
Joseph Goebbels would certainly have nodded approval.
The fact is so many people are aware of what 'the Scotsman' is up to, and th

The fact is so many people are aware of what 'the Scotsman' is up to, and that means it has already failed.
Please 'Scotsman' it's way past time, start trying to be a balanced Newspaper, for everyone's sake, if not, for your own survival !

87. Traquir. Good post.

the oil revenues to date are near £300 billion - had such a sum been harnessed by Scotland we would be the richest country in Europe. I just don't understand the Unionist mentality that now sneers and scoffs at the idea of harnessing the next £400 billion in revenues. It is sad to see Labour and Tory types arguing that the oil is running out imminently, or that there is no point in having £400 billion to spend as it will run out.... Unionists have been allowed to waste Scotland's potential for far too long

Fascinating stuff, it doesn't bode well for the 'Scotsman'.
Hopefully the realisation that there are going to be more potential readers in the 'Independence supporting sector', will trigger a change of direction in a future merged publication.
It surely won't just be for commercial reasons, think of the improvement of having a readership with higher IQ levels !
The challenges of providing balanced coverage !

Gord Almighty!

If Labour can't manage their own Finances how the heck can they manage UK PLC?

The answer of course is that they simply can't.

No wonder Prudence Broon gnaws his nails so much....

'Colour Climax' would be the complete opposite to 'the Scotsman' where nothing stands up to close scrutiny.

It will be a pity if this site goes down with the paper, it isn't actually badly designed, although I did prefer the earlier layout.
It's a bit like watching a well heeled Tory driving a Porsche, you can admire the design, but oh the content !

I don't know if you were posting under the same moniker then, but I think Ayrshire and I were the first to post on this format.
And we did not like it.
It got better, gradually.
Even AM2 agreed it was not fit for purpose!
