HOUSING associations today warned of hefty rent rises following a cut in the Scottish Government’s overall funding for affordable homes.
Edinburgh will receive £36.1m this financial year – the same as last year – to build an estimated 600 affordable houses. But the allocation has been branded a real-terms cut.

Ministers have told housing associations the current subsidy level of £77,000 per house is “unsustainable”.

Edinburgh North & Leith Labour MSP Malcolm Chisholm, left, said: “It is deeply disappointing there has been a real-terms cut in the money for this year.

“The subsidy per house is significantly down, which means big rent rises in the pipeline.”

It is time that Housing Associations are revealed for what they are, an extreme money pit.

No private developer would build a house, costing in excess of £77,000 to build, unless they were marketing it for £150,000 min.

SO we are to believe that, HA housing is all in the £150k+ class, I think not.

Perhaps it is time to overhaul the role of HA's given that very few of them are cost effective, or efficient.

'Social Housing' (what a ridiculous phrase) Affordable Publicly owned housing, should not be left to HA's who have different rules from local authorities, better that all 'public housing' be brought under 'National control' and administered 'locally' by local authorities.

With local authorities being able to use and raise revenue to provide modern, efficient and affordable, in all senses of the word' accommodation for rent with absolutely no possibility of said accommodation being 'sold off'.

Yes, but the problem is, westminster won't write off housing debt for councils unless they transfer stock and become housing associations. And whilst £30m investment from SNP is welcome it will hardly go anywhere.

You can have as much homelessness or unaffordable housing as you are prepared to tolerate. Years of nonsense right to buy from tories and nothing done about it by Liebour have led us to this.

Edinburgh will receive £36.1m this financial year to build ..... affordable houses.

These will be new houses, so why the need for rent rises?

Another bullsh!t propaganda sheet straight from the Scottish office. How this rag plans to survive within an Independent Scotland is beyond me.
