A PETITION is to be submitted to the Scottish Parliament asking for support in the battle to pardon the last person to be convicted of witchcraft in Britain.
Paranormal group Full Moon Investigations will submit the petition to ministers urging them to pressure the Home Office into fully pardoning Helen Duncan, a Scottish housewife jailed for witchcraft in 1944.

Ms Duncan, who lived in Niddrie, conduc
ted seances throughout Britain, but was allegedly arrested because it was feared she would divulge details of the planned D-Day landings.

The Scottish investigators are also aiming to secure a posthumous pardon for almost 4000 people who were prosecuted and tortured prior to being executed under the witchcraft act throughout Scottish history.

Full Moon founder Andrea Byrne said: "The pardon of the 4000 prosecuted as witches is very relevant in today's society.

"Occupations such as herbalists, acupuncture, midwifery, reiki and health foods can all be seen as having roots in the traditions and people who would have been classed as witches in their day.

"We have been very privileged to have been asked to spearhead the Scottish campaign on behalf of Helen Duncan and also those accused of being witches throughout Scottish history."

But many of the women burned as witches were not frauds out to con the gullible. Plus we have the benefit of science.

She wasn't prosecuted for witchcraft. She was detained during a time of crisis in the interests of national security. There is a big difference.

Withcraft became a crime when the country was being converted to christianity. Before that, most people were Pagans of some or other description. And contrary to popular belief, they did NOT sacrifice virgins to the Devil within a ring of fire in the forest on the night of a full moon. Such stories were put about by the christians in order to cajole people into changing their beliefs.

Anyone who refused to follow the new christian religion was branded a witch, and severely punished for their choice.

What a silly idea. What on earth's the point? Are we now going to pardon people retrospectively for doing everything that was once against the law but is so no longer, from wearing tartan to having gay sex?

Ever person condemned as a witch since the arrival of christianity on to these shores should be "pardoned" from their alleged "offences" as a matter of course. Religion no longer runs the country. Retrospective pardons for all!!!

Helen Duncan was in a diffent situation altogether though. The Act of the time was used to silence her from giving comfort to those who had lost family in the war, specifically a ship that was sunk. It was a completely rectionary move by a government in fear of spies. It is clear that Helen Duncan was not a spy ... or indeed a witch. She was a complete innocent whom the government used to make an example of.

My grandmother consulted her a couple of times and always stood by Helen Duncan's belief in her ability to contact the spirit world. I don't know about that ... but I do believe the woman was harmless.

Pardon her NOW ... and let's nor carry on this fight to clear her name for another sixty years!

Hopefully the Parliament's standing orders will not allow this frivolous nonsense to get past the front door.

#5, but when do you stop giving retrospective pardons for all sorts of things that were illegal once but aren't illegal now?

#7:

I'm more concerned for the things that were LEGAL once but are now ILLEGAL... Very much concerned...

Think about it.

#8, what things?

(Since I'd like to see as few things as possible being illegal, I'd probably agree with you - but I'd still like to know what things you're thinking of.)

Our parliament has more than enough to be getting on with without wasting valuable time on this nonsense.

Why are shrooms (Psilocybe mushrooms ) illegal. They grow wild in nature. Users of schrooms are thrown into jail, but not yet burned at the stake like witches..

Homeo Sapiens are a pathetic destructive species

#2 I believe that witches were executed by hanging and not burning.
