DIAGEO has refused to rule out moving its bottling operations out of Scotland altogether.
Its managing director in Scotland, Brian Donaghey, fuelled concerns about more job cuts when he told a Sunday newspaper that "Scotch has to be distilled and matured in Scotland, but it doesn't have to be bottled in Scotland".

A spokesman for the company said yesterday it could make economic sense in some circumstances to move bottling closer to export markets.

A spokesperson for finance secretary John Swinney said an offshore move would dilute the brand, while Glasgow SNP MSP Bob Doris also said "to suggest bottling whisky overseas will do Diageo more harm than good".

Briton : Not if you were in the EU , a la SNP game plan and the new bottling plant is in Eastern Europe.

Gnats : Alex Alex, whit ur we goin tae dae noo Alex.

1.

I know you hate the SNP but with Independence I think you would find that the entire whisky industry would find being in Scotland rather than London would prove beneficial for them as well as Scotland.

What is certain is that Scotland should not tolerate another mainstay industry being removed from Scotland.

What's happened to the SNP's proposal to apply a minimum charge to alchoholic beverages?
That was to applied without reference to one of our main indigenous industries and would have had a serious on sales of whisky.
So now they are pretending that they care about Scottish industry?
Unfortunately their abysmal record to date says the opposite.

Minimum charge is coming, probably across the whole of the UK eventually.
Incidentally, can you name any brand of whisky selling for less than 40p per unit ? (Excluding stores own brands which may well be loss leaders.}

Diageo will do what it is allowed to do under EU law - which is pretty much what it would be allowed to do under an independent Scotland, ie whatever it likes.

Salmond's outrage is understandable, but he has to be more in command of the mixed signals he sends out - he can't say 'Scotland is open for business' and then complain about, say, Poland also being open for business.

passed an oddbins on sat,on the bus,poster in window states £8 off a bottle of scotlands finest
just wonder if that was for malts,or any brand?

its whisky,scotch is for eggs,tape and yanks describing scots
better to be bottled at source,than scotland losing jobs to slave labour elsewhere in the world,as seen on ch4 with primark,wee kids paid pennies to hand sew sequins on expensive tops,thus making huge profits for greedy companies
by all means make a profit,as it lets you expand and create jobs,but not when its being made on the backs of the worlds poorest

The Scottish Parliament want to have control over tax, but probably have no 'bottle' (no pun intended) to actually reduce it in order to both attract industry to come here and to keep the big industries we still have.

This story illustrates the success, or failure, that we could have if we looked attractive. No one will come to Scotland just because it is Scotland. They will only come if there is a reason to come.

We could be mega-successful, or just another failure that no one cares about. I suspect our politicians will take the cop out route. If we lose this industry then what do we have?

#10 What on earth do you mean, "no one will come to Scotland."

It is precisely that kind of negative whimpering mentality that got Scotland into the mess she has been in all these decades under performing the rest of the UK and being bled white by Westminster.

Why on earth does any one live in Iceland, Greenland, Faroes, Shetland, and all these small independent nations on the edge of Europe as we are.

Scotland is a rich rich country. Natural resources and people of the highest caliber. The only element missing from the equation is self government, a source of national shame that keeps Scotland's nose firmly in the dirt.

Get of your knees and stop your snivelling man.

Shareen’s treatment of the Diageo closure in Kilmarnock

Sunday morning’s edition of Shareen and pals …..She reported that Des Browne had criticised the SNP for being asleep on the job regarding Diageo when he first heard of their plans for the Kilmarnock plant, and that he had repeated this claim later on in the week. We then heard a tape of Browne claiming that the SNP had been caught asleep on the job over the Kilmarnock plant and that there was no reason to think it would be different for any other part of Scotland. No SNP representative was allowed the right of reply.

It was a clever move by the BBC to replace the previous Sunday morning weekly news digest hosted by Ken Macdonald with Shareen and pals: an impartial look at the week’s events had been replaced with a panel giving personal interpretations of events. The guests are invariably unionists - no surprise there then!

(NB from Mediawatch)
Newsnight Scotland last night covered the Diageo crisis with nobody from the Scottish government present ,nor was anyone from the Scottish government even mentioned. Des Browne was interviewed extensively and at some length in what was little more than a Labour PPB.The bias in BBC Scotland is becoming extensive and regular and is a matter of some considerable concern. Unlike newspapers we cannot stop buying. We can however organise a mass licence fee boycott and ensure that it receives maximum publicity in order to damage this biased Corporation.It may yet come to that. Please keep your reports of BBC bias coming in. These will be used anonymously or under a pseudonym if requested. Have a look at this meantime;
