In an exclusive interview with David Maddox, two key Conservative figures outline the party's election hit-list
ALISTAIR Darling appears to have become the Conservatives' target for biggest scalp in the general election next year.

Over the past few weeks, the Tories have stepped up their campaign in Mr Darling's Edinburgh South West constituency in the hope
that they can achieve a symbolic victory in Scotland.

A win in Mr Darling's seat would represent a comeback north of the Border and indicate voter disaffection with a Chancellor who has been in office during the worst recession since the 1930s.

As Mr Darling was in Brighton, trying to play his part in a Labour fightback at the party's conference this week, the Conservatives drafted in two senior figures to help woo voters away from him in his constituency.

Shadow work and pensions secretary Teresa May and former defence secretary Sir Malcolm Rifkind joined Scottish Conservative leader Annabel Goldie on the campaign trail.

The move came as notes seen by The Scotsman revealed that the Conservatives' target is to gain a minimum of four seats in Scotland next year, including that of Mr Darling, doubling that number to eight in the following election, probably in 2014.

Ahead of a walkabout with Conservative Edinburgh South West candidate Jason Rust, Ms May said she compared defeating Mr Darling to the losses inflicted on her party in 1997 and to figures such as Michael Portillo.

"It is always symbolic when a senior figure is defeated," she said. "In Alistair Darling's case, the fact that he is Chancellor would make it even more so.

"But the important thing for us is that it is part of a cumulative number of seats where we get in good Conservative candidates as MPs."

But Sir Malcolm – one of the high-profile scalps for Labour in the 1997 election, and whose old Edinburgh Pentlands constituency now falls largely within the new Edinburgh South West boundary – admitted he would feel some sympathy for Mr Darling if the Chancellor were to lose on election night. "Despite being foreign secretary, I was swept out (of Edinburgh Pentlands] because of the national mood for change in 1997," said Sir Malcolm.

"The Chancellor faces the same problem. The mood is very positive for change.

"I would have some sympathy with him if he lost, but I would not be disappointed."

Mr Darling's Conservative opponent will need to overturn a 7,000 Labour majority if he is to win in Edinburgh South West.

Sir Malcolm himself was voted out in 1997 despite having a majority of more than 5,500, but that was during the Labour election landslide.

Polls point to a Tory victory with a much smaller margin than that of Labour in 1997, but the rise in popularity of the SNP could also threaten to take votes from the Conservatives in the seat.

Sir Malcolm, who is now an MP for the safe Conservative seat of Kensington and Chelsea, spoke to The Scotsman ahead of a fundraising dinner for Mr Rust.

However, a spokesman for Scottish Labour dismissed any threat to Mr Darling's seat and said the "David Cameron effect" had not registered in Scotland.

"Alistair Darling is a remarkably well-regarded MP here in Edinburgh," he said.

"The reality is that David Cameron's Conservatives are less popular in Scotland than even Mrs Thatcher was."

winning one seat would be a comeback.....?...., if they had 2 seats out of 59 that is not a mandate. and everyone except mad dog knows that.
if the snp had 20 seats would that be amandate for a referendum? mandate schmandate garbage from mad dog.
they should fight murphy as well and get to 3. and maybe 4 or 5 if one or two break their way in a 4 way contest so 30% sneaks it.
as for darling being well loved, he has fiddled his expenses and flipped houses 3 times and his constituents are losing their jobs. get real.

Maddox back from Brighton, obviously didnt learn anything and still taking his breifings from Labour
Who else would believe the vacuous statement that Darling is 'well regarded' in Edinburgh!
Maddox is in denial and is being told by Labour not to believe the fact that Labour are finished.
Thank God we dont have to rely on Maddox for keeping us informed of whats going on!

I loved that bit, like there's going to be another U.K. election in Scotland in 2014.
Hardly a peep about the elephant in the twee south west of Edinburgh called the SNP.

The SNP doesn't exist. We'll be bankrupt if we voted for independence. We're a bunch of nyaffs sookin frae our English mammie's teat.

Your inability to write a decent, level headed, open minded article is only eclipsed by your shocking disregard for your fellow Scots' intelligence Mr Maddox.

As Iain Gray now says, and Wendy before him, "Bring it on!"

Next year, the Labour party is ousted, not only from Westminster but from Scotland. A couple of months later, a resounding YES in the referendum as promised by the SNP, that will have been pushed through by all MSPs desperate to keep their deposits with the now enlightened Scottish electorate. The year after, assuming the Tories are hanging on to us for dear life, knowing that our oil revenues our saving them from going cap in hand to the E.U., a landslide victory in the Scottish elections. The result? The argument over the "british" footie team at the London Olympics becomes null and void.

You read it here first.

"is one of four on the Conservatives' wish list"

Are the Tories being a bit ambitious? It shows how absolutely despised the Tories are in Scotland that their ambition is limited to 4 seats. What sort of mandate is that to Govern? None at all.

"The mood is very positive for change."

But which party represents change? Swapping Labour for the Tories is no change at all. Same policies, just a different bunch of scumbags. The people who want change will vote the SNP.

I see Maddox desperately trying to paint the SNP as the alternative to the Tories, with the Labour vote immune to the SNP presumably.

We're 7-months away from the next GE. Labour will start increasing their use of the Scottish press and media, and it will be even more ferocious than May 2007.

The Tory candidate, Jason Rust, is one of the councillors who voted to waste money on the trams. Hardly a good track record for a prospective MP for a party that wants to cut back spending and spend the rest of the money wisely.

Living as I do in South West Edinburgh, and talking to neighbours and people at the shops and so on, I am certain that ONLY a Labour spokesman could have said:

"Alistair Darling is a remarkably well-regarded MP here in Edinburgh"

The general reaction to him here seems to be dislike and distrust, and not one person I have heard speak about him has been positive. So the 'well regarded" area of Edinburgh seems to be restricted to Labour HQ!

One Nationalist I know even admitted (very, very quietly) that he could foresee voting Tory for the first time in his 40+ years to get Darling out!

Too much for Scotsman and Mad Dog to point out fact that SNP topped the poll beating both Labour and Tories in this exact constituency in European Elections in June which is the most recent test of voter intentions.

However that won't stop Lib Dems from claiming its a two horse race.

I'm always confused when people round here think that the SNP are an alternative to the Tories. The SNP are Socialists, and the Tories are Centre Right.

Most European countries are run by Centre Right administrations, so why should Scotland be any different?

Are there so few people in Edinburgh working in the private sector that a party that advocates a smaller role for the state can't get a look in?

So the Tories are aiming for 4 Scottish seats but will in all probability be forming the next UK govt. Meaning that they will be in overall charge of the governance of the Scottish people. Who didn't vote for them. I know 80's retro is fashionable but not in politics, please.

Rather than the 80's I would suggest, at least humourwise, your attitude remains in the 60's and 70's when so-called 'comedians' were regularly making such jokes along with ones about the blacks and Irish - no doubt the kind of comedy you find funny.

Lord Mandelson is a politician for the oligarchs, the european super-rich, and how he is in the Labour party, which was created to represent the interests of the british working people, shows how far it has sunk. It didn't cause me or my family distress, I just don't like bigotry or homophobia.

You may well dislike Mandelson and his party and you are perfectly entitled to criticise him as a person, and his party and its policies.

What is not acceptable is to criticise or make jokes about him based on his sexuality.

I trust you would not criticise a politician based on the colour of their skin, it should be likewise for his or her sexuality.
