City residents rack up £92m in unpaid poll and council tax

MORE than £92 million is owed to the city in unpaid council tax, new figures revealed today.
Over £5m is still owed from as far back as 1996-7, when the City of Edinburgh Council was formed.

On top of that, around £73m in unpaid poll tax is still owed by Edinburgh residents.

The figures, revealed following a Freedom of Information request by the Evening News, are accurate as of March 31, 2008.

Last year, just over £14m went uncollected, and over £11m is outstanding from 2006-7.

City finance leader Gordon Mackenzie has hit out at the "unfair" attitude of thousands of people who fail to pay it.

Council chiefs have pledged to continue chasing the money.

I was told a few years ago I owed poll tax despite not being resident of the country at the time. Thankfully I could show the idiots my visas as it was a non-European country but it just shows how inept the system is.

Dock the benefits/wages of anyone not paying.

No, they put all of their energy into chasing the people who do pay. I have paid this tax and Rates for over years but recently had Sheriffs Officers at my door as I had apparently underpaid by £35 - due to payment dates on electronic transfers – so now I had to pay £1,360 NOW. I was away on holiday so the insensitive licensed bullies decided that they needed to share this private and sensitive (and incorrect)information with my neighbours. Thanks boys. I finally spoke to someone at the council after 45 minutes of trying to get through the automated call handling (?) system who admitted their error and had the action rescinded immediately. But how much did this blunder all cost, and what damage has that done me? As if they even care.

I will write to the Sheriffs officers and demand an explanation as these idiots could have done real damage and may well have for all I know.
