THE Prime Minister's decision to hold Cabinet meetings outside London is costing the taxpayer upwards of £200,000 a time, new figures suggest.
Sessions in Birmingham and Leeds last year, along with one in Liverpool today, could cost a total of £600,000.

Of course that doesn't include the cost of the policing and the loss to businesses when town centres were closed off.

And labour complained about the cost of the Scottish cabinet's tour ...

London's desire to copy the SNP's democratic move is to be applauded. The cost in either case of bringing Government to the people is of no importance.

On the other hand the unionists should now publicly apologise to the SNP for throwing their 'smaller' costs back in their face. It was unfair and unjust.

I wonder if the Scots Tories have any views about the vast sums being spent by Westminster in holding 3 cabinet meetings throughout England?

After all, the Scots Tories were only too quick to criticise, in stark contrast, the modest cost of last year's Holyrood cabinet meetings at 8 venues throughout Scotland.

They have a perfectly good cabinet room inside No10 Downing Street. To travel around the country having cabinet meetings is pure madness (mind you, that's not too out of character for stupid labour is it?).

Make them foot the bill for these sojourns out of their own pockets.

Brian,

In case you were not aware, a cabinet meeting is a meeting held in secret between members of the cabinet and exceptionally their invited guests. Cabinet meetings are not public affairs and the minutes are covered by the Official Secrets' Act.

This daft waste of money can be in no way construed as "bringing government to the people" (whatever that is supposed to mean). Like I say, the idiots should foot the bill themselves, out of their own pockets.

Thanks for that Alternative. I was aware that these could not be bona fide Cabinet Meetings but the idea of taking the Cabinet and PM out of London to have 'Cabinet' meetings with members of the public present is a major gesture towards inclusion and therefore a price worth paying.

Obviously a good idea or Brown wouldn't have copied Salmond. Must be hel*lish always having to play catch up :)
