Published Date: 01 July 2009
Prime Minister Gordon Brown pledged his Government stood "ready to help" the unemployed after a drinks firm today announced it was axing around 900 jobs.
Diageo said the jobs were to go in Scotland as part of an overhaul which will see the closure of its distillery at Port Dundas in Glasgow.

The drinks group is shutting the distillery, which has been producing whisky since 1810, and is also closing
a packaging plant at Kilmarnock in Ayrshire and outsourcing some of its warehousing operations.

The jobs will go over the next two years, but Diageo – whose brands include Guinness, Smirnoff vodka and Johnnie Walker whisky – said the changes will also see 400 jobs created through the expansion of its packaging plant in Fife.

Labour MP Gordon Banks (Ochil and South Perthshire) said the announcement contained "mixed news with job losses over two years but also £100 million of investment" some of which would be in his constituency.

He raised the issue with Mr Brown at question time and asked him if he would do "everything you can to negate the loss of these jobs".

Mr Banks further urged the Prime Minister to meet bosses at the drinks company to discuss their plans for investment in Scotland.

Mr Brown told him: "Where there is unemployment we are ready to help."

And he said measures announced on Monday – when he had pledged the Government would spend £1 billion to create 100,000 jobs for young people and another 50,000 in areas of high unemployment – would help.

He continued: "Where there is capital investment being made by firms it is possible for them to get new capital allowances that were introduced in the Budget to stimulate new investment.

"And what we are seeking to do is have an investment led recovery, the capital spending that we have reallocated to 2008-09 and 2009-10...is vital to doing that and we will continue to back private investment in our country."

The Former Mr. Angry,

Well since most of his employment "initiatives" have shown no sign of appearing so far, the Port Dundas workers would be well advised to look out for themselves rather than rely on this fake.

Brown will order an independent enquiry.

He'll probably order an independent inquiry into whether or not there will be an independent inquiry; then when it reports he will ignore it and do what is best for him electorally, as long as it doesn't cost money.

As the former mr angry points out, he talks big and acts small. Rest assured though that the workers will, as per usual be treated like unemployed cattle from day 1. It is more than degrading the way JC+ treats you.

So our busted flush of a Prime Minister is going to stand ready to help those unemployed as a consequence of the closure of the Port Dundas distillery.

I think we can all understand what his claim about ' standing ready to help' means.

Just like his ending of boom and bust and his latest claim that the UK is leading the world out of recession.

A thoroughly busted flush of a man and the electorate all know it.

Oh I am sorry for those harsh words.

I should not disparage the great man who through his prudence and sound economic management has brought the UK to where it stands today.

Single handedly he has brought us to the promised land of mass unemployement, ruined banks, ruined savings, sky high taxation, astronomical public debt, and the best government that money can but - literally!

And now with the leaking of proposals that the Scotstoun and Govan shipyards are under threat of closure through lack of MOD orders, I think I was really wrong to question what Gordon Brown means when he says he stands ready to help.

Gordon we believe your every utterance. Just a pity we can't be allowed a vote to tell you so.

He'll hold an enquiry, but he'll keep it secret.

Talk is cheap Maggie

This unelected cretin of a prime minister will have an inquiry and then do nothing. As usual.

Labour MP Gordon Banks ?

Doubt he'll save any jobs either!

What he will do is ensure that these workers if they can't find employment (in the middle of a recession)within a year, will be forced onto workfare programmes to ''earn'' their benefits.

I am sure they will be suitably grateful.

The only conclusion is that Broon is a liar.

Is it stating the obvious to say that Brown is a lying, self-serving a***hole. The true inheritor of the mantle of Tony "The Weasel" Blair.

I speak of these... I need a shower.

Naturally, if Broon says he will help then his word is his bond.....Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
Broon is like those guys who hang around bars, drinking rounds from others and then is nowhere to be found when it's his turn to get the drinks in. Hiding in the toilet is normal for Broon I hear.

And he said measures announced on Monday – when he had pledged the Government would spend £1 billion to create 100,000 jobs for young people and another 50,000 in areas of high unemployment – would help.
So that’s the extent of the help we can expect is it. Considering these proposals were announced prior to the Walker’s announcement. I have heard about these job creation schemes before and the so-called training for young people normally means a 13 week computer course. It’s time this government stepped aside, one thing’s for sure, Des Browne is finished in Kilmarnock.
