A GROUP of blue badge holders were due to demonstrate outside the Scottish Parliament today in support of a new law to enforce disabled parking spaces.
Around 85 per cent of disabled parking bays are currently only "advisory", which means anyone can park in them without the risk of being penalised.

But Labour backbencher Jackie Baillie has produced a Bill, being debated today, which would give them legal force.

Ms Baillie said almost 224,000 registered Blue Badge holders in Scotland would benefit.

She said: "This legislation is designed to make the lives of disabled people that bit easier. For far too long disabled people have had to rely on the courtesy of others not to park in disabled spaces, but I am determined to change that.

"If the parliament agrees to the general principles, it will send a strong signal to those who suffer that MSPs are on their side."

Hope it stops the soldiers from Redford using the supermarket ones in our area.

Ever been to a supermarket car park recently? Even in busy periods, you can almost guarantee that only a fraction of these disabled spaces will be occupied---even by chancers. There is plenty of room for disabled drivers to park.

Here is another pointless law proposed by a blinkered knee-jerker from a has-been party. Surely in these troubled times they have better things to concern themselves with than debating whether or not to introduce a law to define common sense? It appears not.

The sooner labour dissappear from the political map the better.

There is FAR too much abuse and they are given out too easily

Nothing against the "genuine" holders, would never like to be in there position.

But far too many

Use other peoples Blue Badge.

Time the Photo was displayed to the outside world to show that the blue badge holders is there

Its not for their carer to pop down to the shops, it should ONLY be used when the person is there.

#2, you're absolutely right - I've read this dog's breakfast of a bill and it doesn't 'give advisory bays legal force'. There's no such thing as an 'advisory bay' - the markings used in that way are unlawful, don't conform to UK-wide legislation and Local Authorities are specifically advised against them by the Department of Transport. What Fat Ugly's bill WILL do if enacted is force Local Authorities to process Traffic Orders for each bay, to make them available to ANY blue badge holder - not just the person who thinks they 'own' them. Then the Councils will have to put in place a regular monitoring procedure to ensure the spaces are still 'required'. It will be a bureaucratic nightmare, and cost a fortune.

It would be as wise for everyone, including Disabled People themselves, to understand that there may very well be a valid reason why a non-disabled driver is using a specified parking bay legally. The passenger accompanying them in the car may be the main shopper etc. not the driver him/herself.

Justy.
