FALKIRK MP Eric Joyce could be facing a challenge to replace him as his constituency's Labour Party candidate, The Scotsman has learned.
The former army major has a fight on his hands to keep his seat after he shocked constituents and local party members with some of his extravagant expenses claims.

Mr Joyce was Britain's highest claiming MP in 2007-8 with a total of £187,334. This
included £160 for an oil painting in October 2007 , £39.99 for two Remembrance Day wreaths in November 2007 and £276.13 for an assertiveness training course in May of the same year.

In December 2007, Mr Joyce claimed £577.25 for a one-night stay at the Hallion, a private members club based in Glasgow.

Questions are being raised about £18,000 he is alleged to have paid for services provided by Ross Martin, a former Labour councillor and close friend. The money was paid in utility bills, rent and consultancy fees to Networks Central, which has recently dissolved, having been run by Mr Martin, who was once a Holyrood candidate.

Mr Joyce has said that Networks Central was the agent for the owners of the building he rented and added its consultancy work was "very worthwhile and greatly assisted me in my work as Falkirk MP".

He has also said he used his own money for the wreaths and the claims were staff errors.

But The Scotsman has been told there are elements in his local party who remain unhappy and are looking for a challenger to replace him as their candidate.

One party insider said there were local candidates willing to stand against Mr Joyce, adding: "We feel badly let down by him."

At the last election Mr Joyce had a majority of 13,475.

Was this decided before or after his appearance on Newsnight Scotland on Thursday night?

If BBC Iplayer wasn't invented for this I don't know what people would do...as this was minutes to play time and time again.

Hurry up now before he leaves the Scottish political scene altogether!

With the SNP in the ascendency all over Scotland, but especially now in the Central Belt too, all opposition candidates will have to be squeaky clean.

That's going to leave very few sitting MPs.

Ourageous, this line of interrogation is simply about his wife! Can't the gutter press leave this poor man alone, rather than drag his private affairs into it all?

Excellent tactic.

Wonder if the blessed Tone Blair will rush to support this specimen, the most sychophantic of Tone's rectum-lickers? There's a church just across the road from Eric's sumptuous office premises. St. Tone of the Mysterious Missing WMD's could perhaps comfort him there.

My favourite response the dishevelled Eric gave in the Newsnight interview? - when asked why we, aka the taxpaying public, were paying for 3 oil paintings in his constituency office, Eric incredibly replied, "because they look nice". He was so pleased with this gem, he repeated it much to Gordon Brewer's amazement.

Priceless moment in an interview full of them

"£276.13 for an assertiveness training course in May of the same year"

Isn't assertiveness kind of part of the job description for an Army Major? Or was his command style more like "I say, if you could be so kind as to please point your gun towards that screaming chappie over there, I'd most terribly grateful"?

"Mr Martin, who was once a Holyrood candidate" - the Labour lackey stood against Dennis Canavan in 1999 and got pumped. Such a good candidate the Labour vote dropped from 59% to 19%. Well worth the consultancy fees for such a dynamic political mind.

My favourite moment was when Gordon Brewer asked about his very expensive consultant that had been paid thousands of pounds by the taxpayer.

He asked "Was he not the best man at your wedding?"

Looking pleased that he had caught Brewer out he answered "No he was not I was the best man at his wedding"

So there!

All MPs in a rush; TO PAY BACK EXPENSES ; Ah right, there is going to be one big pay back when the ELECTORATE KICK THEIR THEIVING #RSES OUT OF OFFICE. Roll on Referendum day when the Scottish Electorate can decide; stay with the union or cleanse themselves and GO FOR INDEPENDENCE. Scotland would be in financial credit in just 2 years leaving england to wollow in her self made debt. I actually feel sorry for the english electorate, for they do not have an alternative party with which to trust their votes with. Have a good weekend.

Funny you should mention the summer house. I came across this from the Guardian, 25th Sept. 2004:

"In the top corner of their garden is the small summer house that they have recently had built - just enough room for a table and two chairs - where, with his mobile phone, Brown works. "The only place I can sit and not hear the house phones ringing.""

Dishevelled, unshaven and generally unkempt looking as well as stuttering, stammering and constantly contradicting himself, Joyce’s appearance and performance on Newsnight was not only an embarrassment to himself, it was also hugely disrespectful of all those people he represents in Falkirk.

Every day it gets worse for Labour, well need to take a good look at councillors next. There will be a real embarassment there.
Think back to all those dodgy deals.

If MPs were self employed the tax man would just look at their capital when they started versus now and ask them where it came from.
That would really separate the men from the boys.

One question remains in my mind, Why did he agree to appear on newsnight Scotland? Is he aiming for stand up at the Comedy Stand?

The whole comedic routine reminded me of the George Galloway interview when , on NOT being asked whether he'd had an affair with a Greek lady he spluttered out the " alright I did have an affair " response , surprising the interviewer BIG time!

Ain't politics fun these days!?

I challenge anyone to watch this (see http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00l94hz/Newsnight_Scotland_18_06_2009/) and come away from it without feeling that this interview on Newsnight with Eric Joyce New Labour MP was the best advertisement yet for all that is wrong with the New Labour party and the Westmonster parliament and its gravy train.

It beggars belief as to how this excuse for an MP ever made it to become an MP let alone his former role as an army officer .

26

TWC,

26 Ugly George,

Dennis Cannavan was a real MP but he was pro the giving of all powers to Scotland. The lack of people like Dennis is what has caused the demise of Labour.
I really believe that the whole movement could be at an end.
If I was attending the Union meetings today in Scotland I'd be telling them to chose a new champion.

I suspect that Major Joyce’s decision to appear on Newsnight may have been unduly influenced by spending rather too long in the Officers’ “Mess” prior to the programme.

On Thursday night, I stumbled upon what is now surely going to go down in history as one of the finest interviews ever delivered on Newsnight Scotland.

Joyce was a complete and utter shambles -
a stammering, incoherent, but strangely smug character who didn't seem to realise he was taking part in his own political death throes.

Never seen anything like it and well done to the interviewer for ripping this idiot apart for all to see.

*Everyone* should watch that interview.

Thanks for the Eric Joyce link..i don't get iplayer. That interview is shocking and frankly hard to watch it is so embarassing!

The problem for Labour in Scotland is that you could count on one hand the number of good, honest MPs; tthat number shrinks regarding anyone with weight!

I agree totally. I am a nationalist and although i have always disagreed with anyone who supports the union Scotland has produced some poloticians who were worthy of respect and were men of principle.

From my time men like John Smith and Robin Cook stand out but today we have the likes of Douglas Alexander and Nigel Griffiths, Jim Devine and Eric Joyce...like you say YES men and nothing to contribute to this country!

What I find absolutely unbelievable(except I saw it with my own eyes) is that Eric Joyce was completely unaware that he was making a complete numpty of himself, and thats really frightening !
Normally one would presume that the one chosen as PPC is the pick of the bunch.

The thought of replacing Joyce with a "lesser" model is too funny for words! Even Ian Gray looks plausible compared to this total dipstick.

They should show this interview on IT'LL BE ALRIGHT ON THE NIGHT!

So, recognising that our Ma

Funny how some of Mr Joyce'local constituency have only now found voice to suggest that their man may not be best suited to serve local constituents ineterst.

I mean none of them would have known that Mr Joyce was the most expensively expensed MP in the whole of the UK, or that he and his family were living full time in the south of England.

A non resident MP claiming big bucks is how some would describe Mr Joyce, but obviously his local party didn't know anything - until now.

Good on them for their new found conscience. The local labour party's honesty shines through.

yce's jor Joyce MP had the highest expense of any MP in the UKho has the greatest of all expense in the whole of the UK, and was anything but resident in his constituency, our local puritans in his Labour

Forget Westminster's mess for a sec and take a closer look at Oslo's new Opera House. Worth Googling it. And don't worry about money going to opera and not the poor, Norway has Oil and Gas, it doesn't 'do' poor.

This is Norway's biggest cultural project in 700 years. Now where do you suppose tiny Norway got the money to build something that would grace the shores of Dubai, New York, London or Tokyo?

Think of all the modern buildings built in Scotland since Oil, including Holyrood. None of them compare, but then we don't have Oil and Gas revenues.....London does.

And Scotland's British Nationalists are determined that it stays that way while the Scottish Nationalists are determined that the money should stay in Scotland.

Which group do you support?
