Congratulations to Edinburgh city council. Just as Britain wins a tremendous haul of medals on the cycling track, and there is more interest than ever before and a possibility of recruiting more young people to track cycling, we bulldoze the only such facility in Scotland (your report, 16 August). Years of underfunding and a lack of development have led to what was once a world-class facility now facing the demolition ball. Bravo.

Why was a velodrome in Edinburgh built without a roof?

Dear Confused,

Your question explores the fact that our politicians haven't the first notion of the importance of sport to the elite, promising and simply mediocre or failing sport enthusiastic.

At age 57 my Olympic ambitions are reduced to the possibility that a geriatric franchise will be promoted to allow me to display my incompetence in squash, cycling, sailing, swimming and skiing.

Yes, our cyclists deserve better as I'm sure many other sports are being neglected through current financing arrangements. [You'll have a struggle to persuade me to put any cash into synchronised swimming or the ballet dancing of the floor gymnastics.]

The nonsense of Team GB/Team UK seems quite clear to small nations within the UK who contribute so much.

Rant finished.
