Our broadcasting networks – and the BBC in particular – are failing their audiences, writes GERRY HASSAN

THE subject of broadcasting in Scotland is filled with tensions and conflict. BBC Scotland and STV do not exactly set the heather on fire, while their respective UK networks barely cover most of what happens in Scotland. At the same time, parts of ...

I do not personally feel I am being short changed very often by the BBC, although i'm sure there could be improvements and their website must be one of the most comprehensive media sites in the world.

For me, on a more parochial note involving ITV's
'Border television', there lies the "slings and arrows of outrages fortune". Here stands Scottish people living in the Scottish Borders in their own country of Scotland and they see fit to treat us as English with their ridiculous scheduling force feeding the Scottish people English progs, while the rest of Scotland get their Scottish specific progs.
I have complained to them on a number of occassions but to no avail, and I know numerous people have done the same. They seem to think, and i'm sure this comes from London, that we are all British so we are all the same in all the regions, including Scotland, Wales and N.I. but of course this an ignorant mindset!!

Last night for the first time in months I finally found a TV program the children were prepared to watch which wasn't the sympsons (literally the only other program they watch).

For someone of the "why don'tyou get up and do something less boring instead" TV generation it is a real shock to find that my children

ARE WATCHING TOO LITTLE TV!!!!

To get British TV in order do the following:-

1. Ban ALL advertising
2. Scrap reality TV shows
3. Scrap soap operas
4. Introduce more high-brow documentaries
5. Commission more quality drama series
6. Put on more high quality comedy shows
7. Give a lot more coverage to sports other than football

When was the last time you saw coverage of power-boat racing, round-the-world-yachting or even decent coverage of the WRC, let alone a full 24 hour coverage of Le Mans?

The highlight of the Grand Prix season is happening the weekend after next. As well as the Monaco GP, you also have the Porsche Supercup and the Historic Grand Prix, plus their associated practices and qualifying sessions. And it is all happening in one of the most prestigious and classy areas of the world.

There will be no coverage of the Porsches or the historic cars. The GP qualifying and race will be puntuated by stupid adverts.

If this was a daft football match, you'd have to suffer hours of "pundits" saying exactly the same thing in their boring monotone, interviews with players who cannot string sentences to together, interviews with fans who are even less capable of forming coherent sentences and it would be made into an national event.

That's the problem with British TV. It's got no class and is pitched at base level.

The BBC has been a great irritation to me .
Impartiality , they know not the meaning of the word.
And I have to pay an enforced fee to be irritated.
Scrap the licence fee and make these over paid , new labour supporters work for their living in the real world of hard knocks.
