Paul Scott is a raving nutcase if he thinks that "Scots" is other than an interesting dialect of English. None of my relatives have ever spoken this "mither tongue" for at least 100 years and the construct of wordsmiths and half-baked poets should be stuffed under their oxters and forgotten. In particular, the Broons and Oor Wullie speak a west of Scotland dialect with little relevance to the rest of Scotland, if you wish to hear a real language go to Buchan and the North East
