No home for nuclear power

ADAM Ingram MP is reported as campaigning to keep British Energy's headquarters in Scotland in the event that EDF succeeds in its bid to take over the firm ('MP fears for British Energy HQ's future', Business, July 27).
Why should EDF maintain and/or develop their HQ for such a programme in Scotland, a partially devolved country whose Parliament and Executive is at best lukewarm to UK nuclear new-build?

The Scottish Executive on December 4, 2006, stated in response to the DTI consultation on the UK Energy Review: "The Scottish Executive clearly set out in its Partnership Agreement that it will not support the further development of nuclear power stations in Scotland while waste management issues remain unresolved."

Having spent an enjoyable 30 years with the nuclear power design and construction consortium which built the Hunterston B and Torness nuclear power stations and also the Inverkip oil-fired station, I am distressed to conclude that my native land, Scotland, today is politically an unlikely country in which to locate by choice the HQ of the UK nuclear newbuild programme.

Is Mr Ingrams oblivious to this situation?

Alan Shaw, Norwich

It was Wedgie Benn, as Min of Tech, who introduced Hunterston B and Torness. Brian Wilson is still enjoying his Nuclear fallout from his seat in his Parkheid bunker and is now cashing in on wind.

Nuclear Energy does not have a future anyway!

Providing an alternative heat source for existing thermal plants using a plethora of renewable energy sources, excluding biomass of course, should be the energy strategy worldwide.

Nuclear power does not have a future in countries controlled by the eco-fascists. On the other hand such countries themselves only have a future as 3rd world backwaters heading towards blackouts, hypothermia deaths & the middle ages.

Itis a matter of great regret that the Scottish government is keen on such Ludditism

Of course no anti-nuclearist who is anything other than wholly corrupt has ever suggested that windmillery etc can remotely replace the power nuclear produces, let alone what it could produce. Perhaps Greenheatman will wish to confirm that he personally is already dontating giving 3 times his electricity bill to help our generators pay for all these renewables & that when the blackouts come they should, so long as possible, be limited to those constituencies where the MSPs oppose nuclear. Thus the voters will be able to enjoy the benfits provided by the Luddites they voted for.

I notice you did not build nuclear power stations in your own country.
