Morton Fraser has appointed its second new partner in a month, with Maggie Moodie joining the litigation team. She joins from HBJ Gateley Wareing, where she was a partner specialising in commercial litigation and insolvency work and has been head of the litigation team for the past eight years.

SEMPLE Fraser has appointed eight new directors in its commercial property group. The new directors are: Caryn Auld, Stephen Dick, Bryan Finlayson, David Horsburgh, Gillian Irons, John Mitchell, Roland Smyth and Anju Suneja.

HBM Sayers has recently appointed two new members of staff: Anne Kentish joined the firm’s Edinburgh office as a partner from Dundas & Wilson, and Desmond Coyne, formerly of Shield & Kyd, joined the firm’s Glasgow office as an associate. Staff recently promoted to senior associate status are Kate Bennett, Andrew Gilmour, Paul Reid and Shirley Wyles.

DLA Piper Scotland has appointed Laura Irvine to join the litigation and regulatory team. She worked as a procurator fiscal depute specialising in cases such as trading standards and health and safety. She has also recently been working within the Office of the Advocate General for Scotland, advising on devolution issues and judicial review of fatal accident inquiry decisions.

RUSSELL Thomson has joined Gillespie Macandrew as an associate in its corporate team, from Fyfe Ireland.

MARK Stewart QC and Morag Wise QC have been named temporary judges.

NEWS
MORE than two thirds (67 per cent) of lawyers during 2007 had at least one instance of a client using a private investigator to confirm or deny their suspicions that their spouse was cheating, according to new research issued by Grant Thornton’s forensic and investigation services practice. Of those that used a private investigator, in 64 per cent of cases it was women checking up on their husbands, almost double the to 36 per cent of cases where the man was hiring.

RICHARD Keen QC, dean of the Faculty of Advocates, has joined international calls for the closure of the US detention centre at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. Keen is one of the signatories to a letter that describes Guantanamo as a “stain on the concept of justice” and condemns the “inhuman and inhumane” treatment of detainees. The letter, which has been signed by jurists from Iraq, is being is being sent to George W Bush, Prime Minister Gordon Brown and to other governments and states.

The winners of the Biggart Baillie Innovation Awards 2008 were announced last week at a dinner held at Glasgow Science Centre. Cash prizes of £1,000 were awarded for the best female, best student and an open category. Each winner also receives a free IP audit from Biggart Baillie. The shortlisted cream of Scotland’s inventive crop showcased a range of ingenuity covering everything from gadgets to improve simple, everyday tasks such as making a cup of tea to an innovation designed to protect soldiers and civilians in war zones.

THE Scottish Legal Aid Board is holding surgery sessions this week to discuss (confidentially) any issues or problems people may be having with legal aid. The sessions are tomorrow at the Roxburghe Hotel, Charlotte Square, Edinburgh and on Wednesday at Millennium Hotel, George Square, Glasgow. Both sessions are 12.30pm to 3.30pm.
