APPARENTLY I better not come to America, because I am in "big trouble". At least, that is what the caller who claimed to work for the justice department said when he phoned me on Saturday. The reason for his anger and menace was down to an on-the-record article I had published in The Scotsman last Friday, in which one of Barack Obama's advisers, Samantha Power, described Hillary Clinton as a "monster", before hastily adding that quote had to be off the record.
This sparked a wave of hysteria on American websites, was seized on by the Clinton campaign and led to the resignation of Ms Power as his foreign-policy adviser.

But the most remarkable revelation to ensue from publication concerned the howls of i...

I agree totally with #1 'a proud doonhamer' The British press, unfortunately including The Scotsman, does not "do" real investigative journalism, particularly if it involves the UK government's egregious cooking of the books about Scotland's finances. For example, forensic accountant Niall Aslen's analysis of GERS 2005 was supplied to the press and promptly suppressed, only coming to light through the internet. See http://www.alba.org.uk/scotching/greatdeception.html.

#2 You are right about the suppression of Niall Aslen's forensic dissection of the government's 2005 GERS report on Scotland's finances, in which he convincingly demolished the assertions that Scotland was being subsidised by the rest of the UK. I am sure that the next GERS report will be influenced by the highly professional methodology he used to discredit what was, previously, no more than a propaganda exercise.

Another story that has been firmly suppressed is the background to the restoration of the Scottish Parliament, which was enforced by international ultimatum against the total and unscrupulous opposition of Tony Blair and his government in London. Revelation of the facts of how they tried, and failed, to prevent the Parliament happening, and the vicious methods they used in the attempt, would suffice to finish Labour off as a political force in Scotland. The story would make any journalist's career, but it is not happening. See the Scotland-UN papers at: www.realmofscotland.com
