THERE were more than a few palpitations in the Labour by-election campaign HQ in Glasgow East on Sunday when news dropped of the vitriolic attack by Bishop Joseph Devine on the party for "violating moral law".
Party managers could imagine thousands of voters streaming out of Mass that morning, picking up their Sunday newspapers and being so taken by Bishop Devine's comments that they would decide, as one, to desert Labour on polling day.

The reason for ...

Thanks, doonhamer - how nice to get some hard facts about the underlying assumptions of the polls.

Friends who were in Glasgow East say responses on door steps are in line with figures given by a proud downhamer.

So following on from the previous post.....

Wouldn't it be a good idea for Labour to stop pandering to a minority, at the expense of a majority and give non RC's parity in west central Scotland? Is it too much to ask of Labour, to stop the bigotry and corruption and get on with representing all of society, rather than a small percentage?

I could jist imagine the Cardinals if the C.O.S informed through the press, that their flock were to vote for Protestants only...world war 3 anyone?

This new found vigour and upstanding posturing from the roman Catholic church was always going to be a risky strategy. The more high profile the lecturing and hectoring of rc's in Scotland, the more that the veneer would be stripped away of the corrupt nature of the morals and views of that church.
Unfortunately the Scottish rc spokesmen (not woman as they are to be subserviant along with gay people and non rc school kids) opens up doors to scrutiny. I believe that Glasgow East will see the start of the fight back of the vast majority of the population, regardless of religion, sick to the back teeth of the roman Catholic churchs view that it and it alone should be the sole "guardian" of our collective concience and moral compass.
They are starting to lose a grip on power in Labour Scotland and the Independence vote is a false dawn.
Scotland can only benefit

So it's true the Scotsman have joined the movement which will not allow feedom of speech for non RC's.

Parity for non RC's is a must!

Far too many comments being denied the right to be seen for my liking on here. Is the Scotmans impartiality on this at risk here?

I thought registered charities were forbidden from political lobbying anyway. Surely Bishop Devine and his church are breaking the tax rules. Sure, they may comment on politics all they like but not while freeloading on the back of our taxes. Are the inland revenue going to investigate this? Also, the Vatican is a foreign state (see the Lateran Accord - google it) and should not be interfering the the domestic politics of another country.
Several laws are being infringed here. Why are the authorities not acting? Do I get a refund on part of my taxes?

It appears the Scotsman are either scared of the truth, or are playing a tune on a particular fiddle for a master and ruler.

Why have all the VALID points which were mentioned above deleted? Does the moderator of this newspaper only allow one viewpoint and anything else is deleted?

So there you have it folks, anyone mildly chastising the RC church or Labour party will not be allowed a voice or opinion, no matter how factual it was or is.

Shame on the Scotsman for not allowing freedom of speech.

Nothing sinister was written, just facts about Labour, corruption and bigotry. But it appears in modern Scotland this is now off limits.

Thank you Davesmith1.
Its a question I always have real problems with. I never get a straight answer, any answer in fact. There are laws in place in this country to protect our parliamentary democracy and they are completely ignored when the church flouts them. Religions are registered charities and as such they are prohibited from political lobbying. That is the law. Why are they allowed to break it and hold the democratic principles of this country in contempt?
Or, to put it another way, Bishop Devine, in his capacity as a church representative, does not have the legal right to make the comments he has been making. OK, its not the most heinous crime ever committed by a bishop but he is still flouting the law.

Free Speech?

Don't make me laugh.

Bishop Devine talks of "violating moral law", when he failed to report a Priest to the Police for sexual abuse.

http://www.sundaymail.co.uk/news/tm_objectid=16496694&method=full&siteid=64736&headline=silence-and-secrets--name_page.html

Yet he is allowed to do so without question on here, when it's this very paper that should be asking the questions it's posters are/were.

Where is the integrity in the Scottish media?
