FAMOUSLY, there was the US general in Vietnam who said he had to destroy a village in order to save it. I detect a similar contradiction when I hear talk about the government "rescuing" the Scottish banking system. As I understand it, this rescue includes the takeover of HBOS by Lloyds TSB, which will see the end of the Bank of Scotland as we know it, jobs lost in Edinburgh and the creation of a "super bank" based in the City of London with an unheard-of monopoly of power.

So, another big name joins the Save The Bank campaign. George Kerevan has always been ahead of the game on the ideas front re Edinburgh and Scotland.

If George says it's not too late and Bill Jamieson says it then then the whole country has to follow the lead of Jim Sprowat and Sir Tom Farmer in supporting this campaign.

Alex Neil MSP was right to pursue his campaign to maintain HBOS independence or even a best case scenario of decoupling HBOS.

The Scotsman campaign and the major names joining it are testimony to Neil's judgement, well done sir. Time now for the SNP to show a little more openness to the idea of HBOS remaining independent whilst maintaining the integrity of its role in the HBOS Lloyds/TSB negotiations.
