Contaminated results

Robert Pate (Letters, 14 May) is completely wrong. The results he refers to were in fact heavily contaminated by local variations in due to fossil-fuel use. Therefore, they are interesting examples of the importance of careful sampling techniques, and show that even the best people can foul up.
However, he goes on to claim that the results were suppressed, while providing no evidence for this assertion, demonstrating a complete lack of knowledge of how improved methods and equipment overtake old, erroneous results.
