An insult to the Scots
There is one overwhelming reason why Flower of Scotland is unfitted to become Scotland's anthem – it is basically anti-Scottish. Consider the first line:
"O Flower of Scotland, when will we see your like again?"
Its implication is obvious: since the 14th century, there have been no Scots worthy of emulation.
That is the grossest of libels and the most stupid of slanders. It would take more than a mere change of key to G major (Letters, 13 May) to alter that. I've heard of the Scottish cringe (though I've never believed in it), but to extend it to a national anthem?
