1707 Scots had no debt

Alan Trench (Opinion, 14 May) asks us to remember that, at the time of the Union, England took over Scotland's national debt. In fact, the reverse was true. At the time of the Treaty of Union, Scotland had no national debt. The bribes the English government paid to various members of the Scottish ruling classes were deemed the "Equivalence", specifically meant to compensate Scotland for taking on a share of England's national debt.
