Housing developments have been stopped to protect birds and everyone can enjoy a quiet fireworks display
The Capital's biggest housing development has reduced its size by 700 homes – to protect a colony of 1000 pairs of breeding terns. Is everyone happy with this decision?

Well done, At last somebody is thinking of our feathered friends.

rson, edinburgh

And 95% of the houses get to be built. Sounds like a reasonable result to me.

RJ

Plus Forth Ports might not be that fussed about the loss of a few houses if units aren't currently selling thanks to difficulties in the financial markets.

Jamiem

Looks like everyone's a winner. Oh but wait...we forgot about the cynics...

Just think of these poor birds who would have flown straight into the new buildings (as opposed to flying over or around them) Complete and utter tosh!!

Down with everything

i take it that the birds are unable to fly to another location? SNH and the like are a greater menace than the hoodie crow and the seagulls combined. The lesser spotted tree birler is in danger stop the work. Of course the badgers and other beasts in the road of the tram along Roseburn Corridor have to go for the greater good!!! What a load of mince.

Arrow

The tern story has got our wannabe sub-editors a bit excited.

One good tern does another.. how about encouraging them to Caltongate and Haymarket

Mallory,Edinburgh

Is this another u-tern?

valleyjim

Don't give up the day job.

Meanwhile, all the birds and animals of Edinburgh will be thankful tomorrow as this year's firework display will be quiet for the first time.

Good, happier pets and no falling masonry for a change.

Perhaps they can use the silent fireworks during the Tattoo too. I like Edinburgh's tourist activities like the Tattoo but having fireworks going off every night for a month is ridiculous!

council never win, bruntsfield

Any chance of silent fireworks being available for sale to the schemies for November 5th?

Unimpressed one

Probably not I'm afraid.

I am not sure that being woken up at 10.36 (or thereabouts) every night for a month is so much fun. I am though thankful I don't have any kids or pets to deal with. People go to the Tattoo to see the pipes/drums/dancers etc. The fireworks are an unnecessary addition to the end and could easily be dropped and no-one (but the local residents who may get some sleep) would notice.

Liz

But some of you like the noise and think that the others are just being boring old spoil sports.

It was only a matter of time before we got silent fireworks in Edinburgh. It will soon be rolled out to all of Scotland, and the ordinary ones banned. For why? Well because the noise is half the fun, so ban it. Sales of silent crackers won't be so good.

Niko Bellic, Pearl Harbor

Come on, if you live in the centre of a city you have to expect a little noise.

Everybody Wins, Tollcross

I'm happy to put up with it every night because; a) I know that it's going to happen. b) i think the whole thing is good for the city; and c) I'm not a complete misery guts.

Tobias Smyth, Edinburgh

Today's question

Is it right to use the police for raiding shops with too much clutter on the streets?
