THE Government's announcement that it does not accept a British appeal court ruling about the People's Mojahedin Organisation of Iran is shameful.
By labelling the PMOI as a terrorist organisation, it has defied the rule of law and delayed democratic change in Iran, greatly damaging the West's strategic interests. The European Union Council of Ministers also put the PMOI on its list of terroris
t organisations in 2002 at the request of the British Government.

Four years later, the Court of First Instance of the European Communities annulled the decision but, at the request of the British Government, the EU Council chose not to implement the ruling and was able to maintain the PMOI on its terrorist list. Now, following a complaint made by cross-party MPs and peers, the British courts have gone into the details of the case and ruled that the Government's decision to maintain the PMOI on the UK list of proscribed organisations was unfounded and "perverse".

This ruling should compel the EU Council to apologise for its wrong and arbitrary decisions in recent years against the PMOI, and compensate this group for the financial and moral damages it has suffered. But the Government did not accept the decision and appealed it.

As Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw often visited Tehran, but the deals he struck with the fascist Mullahs left an indelible stain on Britain's character. Straw admitted he placed the PMOI on the UK terror list at the direct request of the mullahs, who greatly fear the ability of this popular opposition movement to topple their odious regime. The mullahs pressed Straw to place the PMOI on the EU's terror list, threatening commercial penalties for UK interests in Iran if he refused to comply. Straw readily concurred.

Lawyers acting for the 35 MPs and peers who lodged the appeal with the Proscribed Organisations Appeal Commission (POAC) demanded sight of all the so-called "classified" evidence on which the UK Government had heaped its spurious claims of terrorism on the PMOI. Hundreds of pages of carefully censored files were duly released to the courts. Amazingly, some of the so-called independent evidence which claimed the PMOI were engaged in terrorist activities came from two individuals who are well-known as agents of Tehran.

The PMOI has continued over many years to try to clear its name. The fact that it has resorted to all judicial and political options open to it demonstrates the capacity of this movement in the art of leadership and is a good indicator of its capacity at coalition building to bring about democratic change in Iran.

Struan Stevenson is a Conservative Euro MP for Scotland. He is vice president of the ruling EPP-ED group of MEPs in the European Parliament and is co-chair of the Friends of a Free Iran Intergroup of MEPs.

Excellent article Mr. Stevenson.
The Iranian people will never forget the very brave efforts of Western politicians like yourself which are against their governments' shameful policy of appeasing the mullahs' regime. The PMOI are the true voice of the Iranian people. Long live a free and democratic Iran!

The British government should be ashamed of trying to stand in the way of the Iranian peoples path to democracy and freedom.

It is time the British government accepted that it was WRONG to use the terror tag as a way of appeasing the mullahs in Iran.

The British public would be ashamed to know that the so called war against terror and the 'terror tag' is being used to appease the real terrorists causing death and destruction across the Middle East.

An amusing article that shows the depth of knowledge of the author (paper thin!). MKO is a terrorist organization and a cult; this has been researched and reported by many investigative journalists including long documentaries by BBC and other western TVs just a few months ago.
MKO is hated by the vast majority of Iranians for their part in helping Sadam and joining his army and destroying Iran and Killing 1000s of Iranians and later the Iraqi Kurds under Sadam’s instruction. Siding with criminals has dangerous consequences and British government knows it, I hope!

The author is the co-chair of the Friends of a Free Iran? Free for whom; BP or Iranians?
I bet the author has not spent even a single day in Iran! Another armchair General! LOL ..
You Scots better work on your own freedom and independence first!

Look just what I found about this cavalier of freedom!
'Struan Stevenson may not be a corrupt man, but no amount of forthright explanation from himself and others masked the salient fact that he has been the beneficiary of a shady system.'
Alan Cochrane in the Daily Telegraph, 30 th April 2004.

I commend MEP Stevenson for putting to light one of the most baffling scandals of this Labour government. Appeasing the backers of murderers of British servicemen in Iraq and Afghanistan and the “most active state sponsor of terrorism” and the most brutal violator of human rights in contemporary history of mankind, not only is “perverse”, as the POAC court ruled, but is also foolish in the way it is supporting godfather of terrorism around the world. This policy “must be set aside” and I think all peace loving people should raise their voice over this issue. Thank you Struan for taking the lead!

Kiumars, I knew that it wasn't long before the stooges of the Iranian regime came to its defense and showed their commitment to their brutal rulers....how pathetic!

Firstly, the depth of knowledge of the writer is far more than you will ever know or have shown in your comments!

You state that the 'MKO is a terrorist organization and a cult'...how interesting! Incase you have been asleep over the coming months and failed to read Mr Stevensons article, POAC ordered the government to remove the PMOI/MKO from the terror list because it has no reason or justification for proscribing them.

The so called research and news you mention is also fictitious. The Iranian regime news agencies are certainly not credible and the 'investigative journalists' that you talk about.

The PMOI are not responsible for the Iran-Iraq war! Incase you had forgotten it was the Iranian regime which was resposible for sending the Iranian people to war and was ultimately resposible for the death and destruction by not agreeing to the ceasefire that Saddam wanted relatively shortly into the war.

You state that 'Siding with criminals has dangerous consequences and British government knows it, I hope!'...Yes i hope the British government acknowledges this and does what is right, and that is side with the millions of Iranians who want peace and stability in Iran.

It is time for people like you to stop defending the Iranian regime and trying in every way to delay the inevitable downfall of that murdering, blood thirsty terrorist regime.

Nice article Mr. Stevenson and I should add that the Iranian people are proud to have such a courageous and honorable man on their side.
Kumars, if it is his real name without any doubt is one of internet stooges of the Iranian regime repeating word by word the old and failed propaganda of the mullahs. I don't see any need to answer him since the lawyers of UK government had access to all these resources that Kumars is referring to but at the end of the day, they lost.
