I live in Bristol, where I was shopping recently and was offended by a sign in one shop that said Scottish money would not be accepted. Is this legal?

This may seem trivial to some, but not to me.

Em, thanks Janet...why not write to your English or local papers about this...they're the ones you need to get on-side!

(However, as a point of fact, they can refuse to accept it as it's not legal tender...however, it's hardly good old sporting English behaviour is it?!)

Well I don't think sterling notes issued by Northern Irish banks are welcomed with open arms here either.

Bank of England notes aren't legal tender, either - they are accepted by custom and practice, as Scottish banknotes are in most civilsed parts of the UK. The only legal tender throughout the UK is coin.

Too many english £5 notes in scotland...refuse them in your change, even as in the majority of cases english shops accept scottish notes they would never give them to you in your change.
