THE idea of removing the red hackle from the Black Watch TA (Letters, 1 July) is as preposterous as putting lowland regiments into kilts.

The Paras don't jump at all these days, except during training. It is rather like the cavalry riding horses on ceremonial occasions, while going about their normal business on battle tanks. Nobody parachutes into battle these days.

The methods employed by British and other special force are reported in the press recently . They are said to have approached targets around Bagdad over the past couple of years... using specialist wing 'parachutes'.
