So Jim Mather wants an "open debate based on current facts". Does that include admitting that clean coal and carbon capture technology, which he keeps promoting as somehow available now, is still very much in its infancy? Or is he truly not aware that the world's first complete demonstration of such technology has only recently begun at a coal-fired generation plant in Germany, and that "a full-scale system remains years away"?

"a full-scale system remains years away" This is no big deal. Clean nuclear power remain a million miles awy, so it is a complete non-starter.

............and for the record: to date more people have died of coal related illness than ever died of nuclear.

In fact nuclear is presently the safest of all large scale energy sources About forty times safer than taking energy by burning coal or oil and safer even than renewable hydro-electricity.
With our nuclear plant closing down north of the border how much longer does the SNP think they can prevaricate? The future? With the closure of all nuclear plant north of the border, and given the intermittency and therefore unreliablity of renewables ,no matter how much is installed,Scotland instead of being a net exporter will become a net importer and beholden on England for back-up. So much for independence then.

Clarify your units - not too many readers will recognise twy.

Burning coal using CCS takes this industry into a whole new ball-park regarding reduced emissions; this negates your historical comparison.

The future of Scottish energy production lies in renewables; there is nothing intermittent or unreliable about the battery of tidal powered generators being planned for the Pentland Firth, the Sound of Jura and the Antrim coast.

Clarification for those that James F wants to patronise!

twy = terrawatt year

A terrawatt year is a million watts of electricity made and used continuously throughout a year.

.............and as usual James F,(given the CCS pilot scheme in Germany has recently only started) you are making claims and assumptions way beyond what can be made . Until,the results of that experiment are known,'into a whole new ball park'can only be seen as hype and exaggeration. 'being planned'? More of the same. If the renewables industry were given a fiver for every time they used words such as, could,might,maybe,and of course potential.........they would be even richer on the backs of the consumer,than they already are.

Mind you that is thee trait and calling card of everything to do with renewables,not least those who hawk it. Just look to the load factors suggested by the industry for wind and the reality, and then look to the 'potential' figures spouted by Alex Salmond for all things renewable and dream on.

Never mind all you hard pressed consumers ..........the mis selling, money making prime mortgage crash for renewables is on it's way.
The costs and on going expenditure are unsustainable,and most importantly.......... renewables are just not needed. All are but EMPEROR'S CLOTHES.

I worry about people who feel they have to revert to capital letters to make a point.

Maybe anger management would help?

I've been teaching science for 30 years. If you think that more than 1% of the population understand that twy is terrawatt years, you clearly haven't got a scoobie. Condescending nothing; clarify your jargon or you will fail to comunicate it's as simple as that.

CCS; try Norway, Denmark USA. Google is very good.

Yes thank you.......... I am well aware of where pilot schemes for CCS are taking place and at what level.
eg. CCS projects in Norway.

Minister of Petroleum and energy Mrs Auslaug Haga
speaking at am open hearing of the European Parliament,Brussels 5th March 2008. 'Our projects are complicated ,expensive and risky' and there is still much work to be done.

Coal oil and gas and without CCS are going to be with us for decades to come.

As for you having been teaching for 30years? I seem to remember we had all that twaddle last time we communicated,and I still have doubts!
