To right-wing moralists he was an evil man who single-handedly invented the permissive society. Leo Abse, who died last week aged 91, certainly had a hand in some of the past century's most revolutionary social reforms. As an MP he introduced the private member's legislation that legalised male homosexuality in 1967, and was involved in then liberalisation of the divorce laws. Later he campaigned to make adoption easier and to increase access to treatment for infertility.
