Fifty years on, CND protest returns to its nuclear roots

THOUSANDS of anti-nuclear protesters gathered at the Aldermaston atomic weapons plant yesterday – 50 years after the first demonstration there.
Many of those attending the rally organised by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) had been on the first march to the Atomic Weapons Establishment in 1958.
Walter Wolfgang, 84, who was famously ejected from the 2005 Labour Party conference for heckling Jack Straw, was among the organisers of the first rally at the Berkshire base.
Speaking outside the main gate yesterday, he said: "Because of US and UK foreign policy, the danger is greater today than it was during the Cold War – at least then we were vaguely aware of what the other side was doing."
Cheered by a crowd of 5,000, the Labour MPs Jon Trickett, Jeremy Corbyn and John McDonnell and the Green MEP Caroline Lucas condemned government plans to replace the Trident nuclear weapons system.
