A LEADING animal charity yesterday condemned as too low the fine imposed on a royal gamekeeper who caused the death of a badger, trapped in a fox snare on the Queen's Balmoral Estate.
Robert Elliot, 45, was fined £450 at Stonehaven Sheriff Court after he admitted failing to check the fox snare on the Aberdeenshire estate daily, as required by law.
The court was told the body of the badger, caught in the legal fox snare, had been seen at Birkhall for at least a week.
Elliot, of Birkhall, admitted contravening the Wildlife and Countryside Act and is facing "potentially catastrophic" restrictions in his licence.
