Concurred. U2 to me is just a load of fast strumming backed by the same old stupid 80s drum-beat. I certainly wouldn't dignify them by calling it rock 'n' roll!

Those were the first groups that came into my head under each genre. I also like some of the more recently popular artists such as Seasick Steve, Oasis, Kula Shaker and Razor Light. As well as some of the others who are still popular and have been for some time, such as Elton John, Queen, Phil Collins and Pink Floyd.

Strictly speaking Rock 'n' Roll finished in the early 1960s. A lot of modern rock oriented music is generically known as "rock 'n' roll" even though it is not strictly of that genre.

Regarding the music of the 1980s, including so-called "rock" bands like U2 and INXS, the vast majority all shared exactly the same brain-dead "boom-chick" drum beat with an over-loud snare on the 2nd and 4th beats of the bar. Try listening to some at some point and you will see what I mean.

Being used to drummers who actually played their kits properly, I found this daft beat more and more unbearable as time went on. Don't get me wrong, there were some brilliant songs in the 80s but unfortunately, most of them were ruined by bad, unimaginative production resulting in a too thin a sound coupled with the aforementioned nursery school "drumming"---sometimes on electronic "drum kits".

About the only ones to break the mould were Michael Jackson and Queen. Don't even get me started on the manufactured Stock, Aitken & Waterman rubbish!

Give me the good ole rock & roll like Led Zeppelin.

Dunno how you worked out that I was 'defeated' - was just busy at work, and couldn't be ar.sed telling Fuelheid why I thought his list of bands sucked.

And I'm no schoolboy, either - have been going to gigs for 25 years, thanks very much. Only three of them involving bands listed at #9, thankfully.

But ... I'm sure #9 would agree with such omissions from his early list as Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly and the Crickets, Carl Perkins, Bo Diddley, Gene Vincent, The Platters ... the list just goes on and on.
