Like Tricky, Beck Hansen is edging ever closer to 40 but his creative juices are running clearer than ever. Working with Brian Barton, aka Danger Mouse, he is on extremely playful form here. The opening 'Orphans' has a guest vocal from Cat Power that I struggled to fish out of the mix, though her appearance on the fiddle-driven 'Walls' was more easy to detect. 'Gamma Ray' suggests Beck's concern for the environment, which echoes louder on the less strident 'Chemtrails'. It is on these sketchy and more ambient musings that Beck is at his most effective, particularly on the closing 'Volcano'.
