A PENSIONER was left scarred for life after being stabbed twice by a teenage attacker in his own home.
Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard today how John Wilson, 66, of Loanhead, used a table to try to fend off teenager Richard McMillan.

Onlookers tried help the retired horse-trainer, but McMillan still managed to stab the pensioner's back and arm.

Th
e teenage attacker then ran off, but was caught by police later that evening.

Today, McMillan, 19, was sentenced to 11 months in a young offenders' institution, after he admitted the attack.

Speaking after the sentence, McMillan's shaken victim said he was relieved the ordeal was over.

He said: "I'm glad it is all over. I am nearly 67 years old and the last thing I need is to have someone coming to my house and stabbing me.

"He must of thought it would be easy money. I have always been brought up to defend myself though."

Mr Wilson added: "The attack has left me traumatised, I can't go out as much as I used to because I am scared. And I always have my door locked."

Fiscal depute John Cook told the court: "McMillan attended at Mr Wilson's Loanhead flat on December 28, 2007.

"Mr Wilson is 66 and while in the living-room of his home a confrontation occurred between the accused and Mr Wilson.

"Others in the house entered to see Mr Wilson holding a table between him and the accused who had a knife.

"They tried to subdue the accused but were unsuccessful and McMillan stabbed Mr Wilson repeatedly in the body.

"They eventually managed to separate the two and McMillan ran from the flat."

Mr Cook said Mr Wilson was taken to Edinburgh Royal infirmary where he was treated for a "gaping" stab wound on his upper left arm as well as a smaller laceration on his back.

We should condemn a little less and understand a little more.

11 months? We can only hope the crown appeal against the sentence The social worker who negotiated such a lenient sentence should be sacked and the sheriff should never be allowed to sit on the bench again.

I honestly cannot believe someone who breaks into a house and stabs a defenseless old man will do a maximum of 22 weeks in a young offenders institution. What kind of punishment is that? No doubt he used the tired old excuse of "deprived background" "on drink/drugs". Disgraceful absolutely disgraceful.

Can the EEN please print a photo of hardman McMillan so we all know what he looks like?

Hello to my fellow ned Richard McMillan. Don't worry about 11 months inside as there will be plenty of booze and drugs to see you alright until your early release date.

When you are back in Loanhead make your way to the miners welfare as there is always a welcome and plenty of cheap booze for you.

Remember the slogan "Neds united will never be defeated".

The judge is a worse problem to society than the criminals.

Hello All,

Let's face it people, you folks collectively as a society, have legally decided that a person does NOT have the legal right to defend themselves either in public or in their homes!

You've given the edge whole heartedly to criminals: you've stated through Politically Correct Judges/Courts/Sheriffs/Politicians/Criminal Advocates, that VICTIMS of crimes do NOT have rights, while Criminals have all sorts of rights.

The Social Programs for drug users, drunks, criminals of all sorts, the extremely lenient sentences (such as the one for this Attempted Murderer), and the reduced Prison terms (Good Time, sentence reductions after imprisonment, etc.), have proven to criminals that crime DOES pay!!!

What has been the government response to all of this?

To offer up MORE Social Programs, MORE tax money to support criminal behaviour and habits (drugs/drink), while at the same time raising taxes on the people criminals prey upon to pay for those programs, to blame the victims of crimes, and to strip potential victims of their rights to protect themselves.

People, unless you folks get rid of the Politically Correct politicians/programs/criminal advocates, and demand your rights to protect yourselves, things will only get WORSE.

Wake up and smell the blood, pain, and suffering of the victims of criminals.

Cheers from the Rockies

Mr Wilson is extremely lucky not to have been jailed for a very long time for trying to defend himself. Now he'll probably be sued by the intruder and have to pay him huge sums in damages.

Typical lame and useless "sentence". It's retribution time, and stupid, vain limp-wristed politicians and those that prop up the goody-goody social services industry need to be shaken into reality.

Serious pain should be legally inflicted on vicious little cowards that terrorise innocent people. Their parents, if they can be so described, should additionally be held accountable and punished accordingly. Social benefits of every kind should be withdrawn - permanently.

The idiot responsible for editing this report should also be sentenced for crimes against grammar/spelling:

"He must of thought it would be easy money ..."

He must OF thought ...? FFS, where was this dumbo educated?
