THE father of the man found dead in Michael Barrymore's swimming pool is set to stage a protest at the premiere of the controversial star's new stage musical in Edinburgh.
Terry Lubbock, 62, will make the 320-mile trip from his home in Essex to attend the first show in the week-long run of Scrooge at the Festival Theatre.

He is remaining tight-lipped about his plans in Edinburgh but has vowed to "hound" Barrymore for the truth about his son's death.

Mr Lubbock is convinced Barrymore knows more than he is revealing about the death of his son Stuart, 31, after a drink and drug-fuelled party at the star's home in Roydon, Essex, in March 2001.

He was found dead in Barrymore's swimming pool and a post-mortem examination found he had severe internal injuries.

Barrymore, below, has always insisted that the death was a tragic accident - with Stuart drowning in the pool while taking a swim on his own.

Detectives from Essex Police have recently reopened the inquiry into the death and it is thought that everyone who attended the party is being re-interviewed.

Mr Lubbock, who has formed the Lubbock Trust to further his campaign, said today: "The whole idea of us going to Edinburgh is to make sure that Barrymore does not forget us.

"We are going to hound him and squeeze him until he tells the truth."

News of the protest comes after Barrymore cancelled half of the performances in Edinburgh because of a "throat problem" that is said to be plaguing the former Strike It Lucky host.

Mr Lubbock said he planned to attend the Festival Theatre premiere on January 29 with his friend, Harry Cichy, who is co- chairman of the Trust, and the family solicitor, Tony Bennett.

He said: "We'll make it be known to Barrymore that we're there. I hear he's cancelled a week in Edinburgh, which is interesting. I do feel that we are getting inside Mr Barrymore's head and I feel he is being squeezed, which is our intention.

"He knows the truth and he's got to tell the truth."

The second week of performances of the show at the Festival Theatre, starting February 5, was cancelled last week, but the first five shows, beginning January 29, will still go ahead as planned.

Theatre bosses have guaranteed that there will be no problem accommodating everyone who has bought tickets for the second week in the previous week.

But they have insisted that ticket sales for the show continue to be "fine".

Mr Lubbock says he expects the reduced one-week run at the Festival Theatre to be far from a sell-out.

He said: "I wouldn't expect ticket sales for this show to be good. In the past people have given Barrymore the benefit of the doubt despite his rather chequered life.

"This time, they're not so sure and a lot of people are now beginning to realise that they've been taken for a ride."

Barrymore has been re-interviewed already as part of the new police inquiry into the death.

It was reported last week that Essex Police were investigating new lines of inquiry, including that there was a mystery guest at the party that they previously did not know anything about.

Commenting on the show's reduced run, a spokeswoman for the Festival Theatre said: "Ticket sales are going fine and another brochure will be coming out in early January which we expect to provide the final push."

Barrymore's agent, based in New Zealand, was unavailable for comment today.

Completely inappropriate way of protesting or could this be hype to sell more tickets for the opening show?

This man keeps doing things like this and is begining to look like a bully. He should sit back and let the police do their job while investigating and if Barrymore honestly doesn't know then this man needs to accept that he will never know. He isn't the only parent to have lost a child and not know the full reasons behind it but you don't see them behaving like a playground bully.

They should have put this guy in the big brother household when Barrymore was in - I might have watched it.

Just because the death happened in Barrymore's house doesn't mean he was responsible for Stuarts death. Mr Lubbock should leave Barrymore alone, as from where I'm standing he looks like some weirdo celeb stalker!!. In this country your innocent before being proved guilty which Mr Lubbock seems to have ignored.

theman,

The 'ferry 02/01/2007 15:47:55

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Barrymore and Lubbock's Dad have a meeting last year to resolve any questions that the latter had over his son's death??

After reading the details when that occurred, I assumed he was happy with Barrymore's answers, as Barrymore revelaed himself?

This certainly smacks of a publicity stunt - maybe a book deal on the cards for Lubbock???

I guess comment on this story isn't being moderated like the one about Barrymore and the lack of ticket sales a few days ago.
I'm also left wondering why his agent is at a diametrically opposite point on the planet and unavailable.

Alcohol and drugs do not mix and if this is the kind of party that was going on, it's not surprising something unfortunate like this happened. For anyone who has had large parties at their home, even without alcohol and/or drugs, can you possibly know every minute what all your guests are doing and where they are. I do hope Michael is telling the truth but I don't think he can be blamed for the death. I sympathize with the man's father but don't agree with the way he his carrying on.

My understanding is that his son was gay, went back to B'mores house for a party of drink & drugs & then drowned. What more does he want - celebrity status?

Well Dorren, when I have a party at my house, I don't know what all the guests are doing because I'll usually sloshed and my guess is that Barrymore was as well. The guy suffered internal injuries because he was indulging in unnatural practices whilst being high on mind-altering chemicals. And I don't have time to fit folk up because I am too busy harrassing the innocent motorist. theman#10 is probbaly bang on. I smell a book deal and a trip to Richard and Judy's couch to unload his angst.

he jumped at the chance to party into the night at a celebrities house.

if he'd not been found floating in the pool ...then you can bet your ass you'd most likely have read his exclusive story in the next edition of News Of The World...slagging them all off for say £30k

he was gay ....like to party and take class a drugs....so at least he died happy eh?

Doreen,

The Cyber Shebeen 03/01/2007 09:56:55

Mr Paton you yourself are gay and liked to 'party' which has led you to appear on the front pages of several rags. I doubt very much that you were a happy man when your crime and conviction were leaping out at you from the press. Sour grapes perhaps?

"He was gay, liked to party and take class A drugs", as far as I am aware he had just split from his long term girlfriend and was a father of 2 young children. Perhaps he was partying because he was depressed and as far as the "Class A" drugs are concerned it is possible that they were administered without his knowing. Imagine a woman was found dead floating in a pool in say Robbie Williams property, she has a lot of drugs in her system and has severe vaginal injuries consistant with rape. Would you say "She was straight, liked to party and take class A drugs so at least she died happy eh?"
That has to be one of the most stupid and crass statements that I have heard in a long time.

This Case has been jeapordized right from the start due to inconsistencies and inaccuracies. The pathologist who initially reported resigned under pressure, either that or he would have been sacked and struck off. Three other pathologists have concluded that marks on Lubbock's forehead could have come from being asphyxiated and it is believed that he did not meet his death in Barrymore's pool.

Mr Paton, Mr Lubbock does not need to 'get a life' as you so compassionately advised him, he is too busy trying to find the truth of how his son's was ended. Your views here are obviously coloured by your own personal 'experiences' and I would suggest you are biased.

PC20.....been working on this particular case then and know for a fact that this man was not suffocated and raped do you?
