Published Date: 04 November 2007
THREE Cambridge University students were yesterday recovering after contracting meningitis. University officials said the students - two men and a woman - had become ill within the past 10 days and were "well on the road to recovery".
Two were studying at St Catharine's College and the third at Trinity College. A university spokesman said doctors had traced everyone the sick students had been in close contact with. Other students were being urged to report any health problems to d
octors.

The spokesman said a man studying at Trinity became ill on October 26, then a man studying at St Catharine's fell ill on October 29 and a woman student at St Catharine's on October 31.

He said all three were undergraduates and had been admitted to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge. The Health Protection Agency was monitoring the outbreak.

"There have been no more cases," added the spokesman. "The situation is being monitored and the HPA is aware. Life is going on normally at the university. There is no need for panic, nor is there any panic."

The university houses nearly 20,000 students, who began the new term in October. An HPA spokeswoman said the cases were likely to be officially classed as an outbreak when more tests had been completed.

"Every year there are one or two cases at universities when students go back. It's not unusual," she said.

"There's no need to panic. It's business as usual. If anyone has any concerns they should go to their GP."

Look don't be Soo 'ignorant' and come on here, 'bleating', like some 'stupid-sheep'
There 'IS-NOT-ONE' excuse, to not know all the facts on Meningitis, especially being in a situation of an Educational setting.
This IS a time of year when 'Meningitis' particularly raises its 'ugly-head'
So 'Beware' particularly for our young, as in 'Tots'! and even the older ones, as my DYW, who contracted Meningitis last winter,
A truly scare time for me!!

Even if caught early by a vigilant super-hero such as CL, meningitis (especially meningococcal) can swiftly kill fit, young people.

This makes it newsworthy.

If it only bumped off coffin-dodgers, noone would give a toss.

And for once, I don't really think the article is particularly "OH MY GHOD"ish. No great frenzy of journalistic spice that I can see.

I nearly died from Cryptococcal Meningitis when I was a toddler. I was very lucky to survive. Luckily I don't remember any of it, but I got the story from my mother in later years!

Meningitis is a terrible disease, no matter who catches it and all we can do is hope they get through it.

There's lots of sites on the web you can learn about it from. Educate yourselves. Don't be ignorant of this awful scourge!

#2. Glad to hear the DYW got through it, Charles. It's a scary thing to have to go through with a loved one.

Now sunshine watch it as a “coffin dodger” I do believe you should was your mouth out with some decent antiseptic and your hands with some carbolic soap. (sic)
No disease that has a motility rate like meningitis, should be implied or otherwise, as being a tiny bit funny.
As for the “coffin dodgers” hopefully you will be one someday, and of course that may be due to the work put in by the same “coffin dodgers” you appear to be sniping at.

Charles, Charles, Charles - CALM DOWN!

You are getting yourself into such a state that your spelling is erratic and your grammar even worse.

We expect more of you and don't want you laid up with a stroke or something because we enjoy your postings.

Once again - CALM DOWN and TAKE IT EASY!

Re-reading your posting I can now see why you are so frantic.

I hope your DYW made a full recovery. Good luck to the both of you.
