IT is a historic club which spawned a gold medal sprinter and a host of other athletic stars, and it is where Olympic hero Allan Wells took his first steps to greatness.
Today, as the gold medal winner joins the protests over plans to "downgrade" Meadowbank Stadium, his former club vowed to drop "Edinburgh" from its name in protest at the council's plans.

The City of Edinburgh Athletics Club, which also counts Wy
ndham Halswelle, who won Scotland's first gold in the 400m at the 1908 London Games, among its former members, plans to find a sponsor and take their name instead.

Mr Wells, who won gold in Moscow in 1980, said: "People need to sit up and think about what they are losing.

"My understanding is that it is non-sporting people making the decisions, and it is sad that this is the case."

"Even though they are getting a new track and a new stadium, it will be less than they have at the moment – obviously I disagree with that. Meadowbank has been a big factor in Scottish athletics.

"If the facilities could be the same as they have now then that would be best."

In recent years the City of Edinburgh Athletic Club has also supported hammer throwers Shirley Webb and Chris Black to glory and currently trains around 400 athletes at Meadowbank, including Steve Cram's son, Marcus.

Senior coach Bill Walker today said the club was willing to rename itself in protest at the decision to bulldoze the stadium and sell off some land for housing.

Under the plans, approved by councillors this month, a new complex, with an athletics track, will be built on the remainder of the site for around £25 million.

Mr Walker said: "The council does not appear to be wanting to promote sport in this city at all.

"There is no need to demolish any of Meadowbank and it needs to be upgraded, as hundreds of athletes use it every week.

"We are called Edinburgh Athletic Club but do not receive any grant from the council, so we are looking to remove the name of the city from ours.

"We have been very proud to say we represent our city but I feel we can no longer do this when the city council is treating its athletes so badly.

A council spokesman said: "The council is focussed on developing a modern, fully equipped athletics stadium at Meadowbank that meets the very high sporting standards required by athletics and other sports."

I don't know how they can call this fully equiped, as it will be greatly reduced from what it is now.

What about the velodrome? It was never very good at Meadowbank (outdoor cycle track in Scotland: badly needs a roof), but now there won't be one.

How far will people in Edinburgh now have to travel to get a decent sports stadium or velodrome?
This will only increase the impact on the environment as people who used to go to Meadowbank will now have to travel to find suitable facilities.

What happens while the existing facilities are reduced to rubble??? Not a very good build up to the Commonwealth Games, is it??? Just now forward, joined up thinking at all!!!

I really hope politicians, etc. read these blogs, so they can gauge public opinion, but I suppose they won't.

Isn't The City of Athletics Club a daft name. Think of all these poor folk looking on their maps for directions to Athletics.

Or is it more poor journalism from the Snooze as they manage to say in the same story that the club is called Edinburgh Athletic Club and the City of Edinburgh Athletic Club.

The plans are a joke anyway. Edinburgh has some of the worst sporting facillities anywhere. For a capital city it's a disgrace.

There should be a TOP CLASS athletics facillity, including cycling track at Medowbank.

The club used to be named 'City of Edinburgh Athletic Club'. Last year it merged with another club and became 'Edinburgh Athletic Club', so easy to get confused!

#6 and #7 this is a coalition - the SNP are taking these decisions jointly with the Lib Dems. Or, as #6 rightly points out, failing to take decisions, and letting officials run roughshod over them. Roll on the day we get to vote these idiots out.

I Heart Edinburgh,

Unlike Labour of course who planned to close down Meadowbank altogether...

#6 and #7,

If you guys actually read the Lib Dems (or Fib Dems as you call them) manifesto it that they will look at:-

"commissioning a report on the refurbishment of Meadowbank"

Nothing more, so they never broke any promises on that one.

As I've said before, for all those people bleating on about the disgrace of Meadowbank, put your money where your mouth is. Are you prepared to put up the hundreds of pounds each required to upgrade it to a proper international standard?

#10 Ecco Warrior,

And of course that great Sighthil Super Stadium plan involved selling all the land off at Meadowbank for luxury flats. You do remember that.

Duncan # 8

And what's your solution for the funding gap of tens of millions to refurbish/rebuild Meadowbank. And who should we vote in to sort all this out? Not the last lot as #9 rightly points out.
