Breaking News: Meadowbank to be demolished

COUNCILLORS have tonight voted in favour of demolishing Meadowbank Stadium to replace it with a smaller £25 million arena.
The decision followed a mammoth full council meeting.

It means the capacity of the stadium is likely to be reduced from its original 16,500 to around 5000.

The move also involves selling off 8.5 acres of land at the west of the site for housing
, with the stadium demolished and rebuilt to the east, resulting in the loss of the velodrome.

Originally, plans were drawn up to dispose of most of the Meadowbank site, with the proceeds put towards a new national stadium in Sighthill, capable of hosting major rugby and athletics events.

But the controversial idea of selling off land for housing became a major issue at last year's elections, leading to months of uncertainty when the Lib Dem/SNP administration took control of the city.

Officials say providing the equivalent of the Sighthill brief at a new Meadowbank Stadium would cost £57.9m, while a full refurbishment of the existing facilities has been priced at £42.7m.

Opposition politicians have already described going ahead with demolition would be a "massive U-turn" by the administration, after the stadium won a reprieve last summer.

So it will be 14 million pounds cheaper to refurb the existing facilities than to demolish and build something much smaller without some of the existing facilities?? Where is the logic in this?? Oh wait, its Edinburgh Cooncilors, they don't do common sense do they...

Can we vote to demolish the cooncil building instead, preferably with them all still in it, and blow up the city chambers too, does anyone know some Guy called Fawkes??

I don't cycle or run but a city such as Edinburgh needs to have facilties for all sports which will allow athletes and potential athletes to train. Arenas for competition are optional, but the basic facilities to develop and hone skills are not.

Agreed. As the saying goes, you can't polish a turd.

It may be a more modest new stadium but at least it will be up to modern standards. The volume of interest in competitive athletics also doesn't warrant 16000 seats. Even at 5000 they would be lucky to fill them more than a few times per year.

A good decision I say.

No mention of how long stadium/running track will be out of action. Anyone know?

more flats less facilities in the city - and they wonder why Scotland has a problem with binge drinking and obesity!

Sadly this was a done deal many moons ago and protesters probably just added to the bill for a 'consultation' process.

How can it possibly cost £57.9 million to build sighthill's proposed £25 million facility at meadowbank. Moving location does not nearly triple the cost!

LIIIIIIIIIIIIIAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRSSSSSSSSSSS!

So Glasgow gets all the sport facilities it's population needs and we get.... more lego houses. I think the council has forgotten who it's there to serve. Uselesss, lazy, stupid and, on the strength of this decision, probably corrupt.
