Published Date: 08 April 2008
THE managing director of Lothian Buses has hailed the way the city is coping with the traffic diversions in place for the tram line.
Ian Craig said the mix of professionalism from those involved, extensive publicity and drivers taking alternative routes was ensuring the diversions around the city centre were working.

Writing in the Lothian Buses staff magazine, he added: "Unfortunately for the doomsday sayers, the world did not end on March 1 as a result of the closure of Shandwick Place.

"Fortunately for the rest of us, life has, in fact, carried on remarkably unchanged despite the extensive diversions that are now in place. That is not to say life is easy out there – far from it."

Young Bob,

That's because people are staying away from the city in their droves...!

"Fortunately for the rest of us, life has, in fact, carried on remarkably unchanged"

What an arrogant conceited fool....

What an amazingly, thoughtless and tactless statement.

People with small businesses are SUFFERING.

Trade is down by half, cashflow will soon dry up and these previously profitable businesses (which actually do contribute to the city) will go under.

All so that they can replace one solitary bus service.

I travelled via Haymarket at 15.10 today by westbound 44 bus and was pleasantly surprised at how smoothly the traffic steadily flowing!! Even Princes Street to Haymarket via Lothian Road was "just as quick" as via Shandwick Place. Even better, ROLL ON THE TRAMS!

PS Melville Street and Queen Street/York Place etc are MUCH BETTER PLACES without all those parked cars!!!!

If you go to the London Evening Standard website you can find the Fib Dem "copper" candidate for London mayor promising "green trams" if he wins. What is it with these people? Take a look at the comments! Luckily for London he's got no chance.

#3 Andrew.
Your description matches exactly that of my Accounts Payable manager who lives at Winchburgh and travels to and from work by First Bus. I believe she has contacted FirstBus at their Larbert office with a view to making the amended route along Lothian Road permanent. She says the tram will be of great benefit to her as she will be able to interchange or interlink (or something similar) at the RBS and avoid the pinch points at Corstorphine.

ROLL ON THE TRAMS!

Which will be of "real" benefit to approx 8% of the population of the City
What a fine return on caoital investment

I'm not for/against the trams; I'm against the p1ss poor way the council goes about organising roadworks to maximise inconvenience to the masses. Dig a hole, put some cones around it, bugg*r off for 2 week tea break, .......... seems to be the project management approach permitted.
How much inconvenience (& resultant pollution) from taking 2 months (so far) to remove a few toll booths from the Forth road bridge.

Which is it? Life has not changed or it has?

"Fortunately for the rest of us, life has, in fact, carried on remarkably unchanged despite the extensive diversions that are now in place. That is not to say life is easy out there – far from it."

So shopkeeper do not need to be given any compensation as nothing has changed for them?
More tram spin.

Why not say "trams will dramtically improve peoples lives but they will not notice any difference."

Nonsense spoken by self interest spokesman.

7! Ironically it's those who have to travel INTO the city to work that will probably benefit MORE from a Tram system, hopefully by extensions to Livingston,
Dunfermline (new bridge/tunnel?), Portobello (hovercraft?)/Musselburgh, Edinburgh Royal/
Loanhead/Penicuik etc etc etc etc

Somehow, i do not think the people living and working on both Constituion Street and Shandwick place would agree with Ian Craig.
Does anyone remember when they told us they were only going to dig up 200m sections of the road at a time to minimise disruption. I may be wrong, but isnt shandwick place, lieth walk, constitition street and all the other holes in edinburgh add up to more than 200m?

The city is coping because we have no choice....
The people of the city do not want trams, but the council did not make the mistake of asking as they knew the trams proposal would be thrown out.

Today's Vote

Should all under-fives be allowed to travel free on Lothian Buses?
Of course, nobody that age should be charged
Only if they are taking up a seat
No, parents expect to get too much for free
