Prime Minister Gordon Brown was today urged to send a message to bank bosses at Lloyds that further jobs cuts would be "totally unacceptable".
The Lloyds Banking Group announced yesterday it will axe 2,100 posts across the UK.

That takes the total posts axed this year by Lloyds – which merged with Halifax Bank of Scotland (HBOS) – to more than 7,000.

Labour MP Linda Riordan (Halifax)
raised the issue with Mr Brown at Prime Minister's question time.

And she said: "Following job cuts announced by Lloyds would you assure banking staff in my constituency that you will do all you can to protect their jobs."

She also asked the Prime Minister to join her "in sending a clear message to Lloyds Banking Group that further jobs losses would be totally unacceptable."

Mr Brown told her he had spoken to bank staff in the area and said: "I understand their frustrations at what is happening.

"They have served the bank well and they are the victims of what has happened to HBOS in its worldwide activity, and particularly its failures in other countries."

He continued: "We will do what we can to help the staff of Halifax HBOS/Lloyds TSB.

"We are also making it possible for people to have new facilities to find jobs in the area and we will do what we can to reduce unemployment in these difficult circumstances."

Brown as usual long on wind and short on detail. Does the man ever do anything of any use whatsoever?

Statement like 'we will do what we can' are totally meaningless and the same empty rhetoric Brown has been using ever since he became PM.

Why does he not as usual order an independent investigation!

1. Nevsky.

He talks a lot, don't he? Nothing ever comes of it. Of course he can and will blame high unemployment in Scotland on the SNP government, whilst blaming the same thing in England on world economic problems which, you will remember, started in America, and went all the way around the world before landing in the UK.

They don't have the staff in the Jobcentres to deal with this kind of crisis. No one really knows what they are doing and the computer systems don't work properly. The staff are all target bound, and people's needs are far far down the list of prorities.

It is a mess. I think we need to look to the Scottish government if we want any kind of help for them, but the Scottish government have their hands tied by the block grant and the fact that they can't borrow to invest in new jobs at the moment.

The United???? Kingdom... joke!

Do we not own the majority or a near majority of this bank ? Why is Brown ''sending'' them a message about anything. They should be getting telt. The management of these banks screwed up and it is the workers who are now paying the price. We should have taken over the running of these things when they were bailed out to ensure that as few front line staff were penalised as possible, but that the fat cat culture was done away with instead.

Having forced a merger of Lloyds with HBoS Brown made it certain that there would be job losses. Now he stands there impotently declaring that "we will do what we can to help". Long on rhetoric and fine sounding words but rather short on detail. What - transfer them to another bank e.g. RBS? But hold on a minute, they're laying off as well. He knows well that cannot help except by holding a GE so that other more competent people can rescue the mess we're in.
