PADDY Ashdown, the former leader of the Liberal Democrats, has spoken publicly for the first time about his experience of being seduced by a teacher at the age of 14.
The former diplomat revealed the episode in his new autobiography, in which he describes a sexual relationship with a married female maths teacher. In an interview in Spectrum magazine today, he tells Catherine Deveney that it was a form of abuse.

Ashdown, now 68, was leader of the Lib Dems from 1988 to 1999 and was later appointed the international High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina.

During his time as an MP it emerged he had had a five-month affair with his secretary, earning him the nickname 'Paddy Pantsdown'.

In the Scotland on Sunday interview, Ashdown says he was sent to boarding school in England from his home in Northern Ireland. Now known as Lord Ashdown of Norton-sub-Hamdon, he said he was receiving maths lessons from a young married woman when she initiated a sexual relationship.

In the book he describes the woman's open blouse, the way she bent over his book and "allowed" her breast to brush against him.

"She dealt with my inexperience and gaucheness with kindness, tenderness and patience, and for this I have been eternally grateful to her," he adds.

Speaking about his decision to write about the experience he said: "I suppose I could have broken into a moralistic dialogue, but it would have seemed pretty anachronistic to do so.

"It was a rite of passage, and you are always grateful to those who help you through rites of passage. Let's assume I was a woman writing that - would I have told it differently? I honestly don't think so."

His autobiography, A Fortunate Life, also briefly describes the 1991 revelation of his affair. Documents were stolen from his solicitor's office that revealed a brief affair with his secretary, Tricia Howard, some years earlier. His wife Jane had forgiven him already and his opinion ratings went up in the wake of the scandal.

Ashdown also makes reference to former Lib Dem leader David Steel in somewhat unfavourable terms, describing hims as "a bastard behind the scenes".

Doesn't sound like he thinks it was abuse to me. Sounds like he was prompted and didn't refute it strongly enough.

he's probably making it up...
why doesn't someone name the teacher... must be others around who could remember him/her in school.. sexual abuse surely? he shouldn't be making light of it..

Men always claim to have lost their virginity at 14. Had his first handjob probably.

Regardless....this woman abused her position...a 14 year old pupil should be protected from an older predator in a position of authority...

Why is it more acceptable for a 14 year old boy to be seduced by a female teacher?...why is it less acceptable for a 14 year old girl to be seduced by a male teacher?...and why would a 14 year old boy being seduced by a male teacher be an absolute outrage!....

Tch tch..double standards..

#7 Why is it more acceptable? Because at 14 boys are already gagging for it. It's EVERY schoolboy's dream to be seduced by (hopefully) an attractive older woman. Girls often regret early relationships, and not just for the loss of virginity (which never seems to apply to boys!) but boys rarely see it as something to be ashamed of .... in fact, if Paddy's story is true he'll have bragged about it to all his mates long ago!

The "male teacher" scenario is slighly more tricky in that it would depend on whether the pupil was sexually attracted and excited by the encounter. However, it would legally be abuse. I don't mean to be crude but it's well nigh impossible to FORCE a boy to have an erection.

Double standards? ... absolutely right. We can't help the way we are.

" it was a form of abuse".

Don't be daft man. It's only abuse when a grown man seduces a young girl.

It's what happens when those in charge of setting the 'equality' laws pick and choose where and when they want to apply these laws.

I should also point out that when Paddy podgered the teacher he was only months away from an age when most ordinary lads were being sent down the pit to earn a crust for their families.

14/15 year olds were WAY more mature then than the X-Box nation we're rearing now.

does not sound to me like someone claiming they were 'abused'.
